About Daniel Csokmei

Drum Lessons in Horsham – Daniel Csokmei

My name is Daniel Csokmei, and I’ve been playing drums for 25 years. I love what I do, and it makes me happy to be able to share my passion with others. I’m a patient, adaptable, and professional drum tutor, ready to help.

Whether you’re looking for a serious commitment or simply want to learn something new and have fun while doing it, there’s nothing more important than being taught by an experienced drum tutor. I’ve been offering my services to people of all ages, from beginners to advanced drummers. I’m here to give you the personalised attention you deserve so that you can reach your full potential.

I offer graded music materials from the Rockschool syllabus, if required. The Rockschool graded system is very versatile, including styles such as Pop, Funk, Rock, Rap, Jazz, and Latin. Rockschool is very popular, and from Grade 6 onwards, UCAS points can be earned.

I teach beginners, intermediate, and advanced students, and I charge £25 per hour.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or someone who never quite learnt the basics, it’s important to build a solid foundation on any instrument.

I split my lessons into three parts:

1st part: Warm-up exercises and a review of the previous week’s lesson (5–10 minutes)

2nd part: Learning new techniques. We practise them slowly and, when they feel comfortable, gradually increase the speed. Once we’re happy with the new material, we apply it to a drum groove and explore different musical situations.

3rd part: We play some music! It can be your choice, but I can also suggest songs and help you apply your newly acquired knowledge through music.

As a beginner, you will learn:

  • The parts of the drum kit
  • How to hold the drumsticks
  • How to avoid injuries
  • Warm-up exercises and natural body positioning behind the kit. IMPORTANT: We always warm up before practising, gigs, and rehearsals!
  • How to read drum notation
  • 1/4, 1/8, and 1/16-note grooves and fills (find the beat of your favourite songs)
  • 1/8-note triplet grooves
  • The five most important rudiments
  • Four-bar phrasing
  • 4/4 and 6/8 time signatures
  • Shuffle rhythms
  • Triplets
  • Basic independence exercises

Intermediate lessons:

  • Snare drum rudimental exercises
  • Bass drum techniques (slide, swivel, and heel-toe)
  • Finger control
  • The Moeller Method
  • Push and pull
  • Musical styles, including:
    • Funk
    • Reggae
    • Blues
    • Jazz
    • Latin
    • Drum and bass
  • Linear drumming (how to create your own grooves and fills)
  • Metal (double bass grooves and fills)
  • The foundations of extreme metal

Advanced lessons:

  • Odd time signatures
  • Advanced ghost-note workouts
  • How to build a solid double-stroke roll
  • How to develop solid double-bass speed
  • Hand-to-feet boot camp (17 killer, nonstop exercises around the kit)
  • Soloing using rolls
  • Stylistic studies, including drum and bass, Funk, Latin, Trap, Hip-Hop, Hardcore/Punk, Disco, and Metal.
