About Brian Jenking

Explore all aspects of bass guitar playing with an experienced tutor and musician, in your own home or online.Whether you are looking to work through grade exams or just to get ready to find your first band, we’ll have it all covered. Each lesson builds on the last and you’ll soon see how everything links together and where musical ideas come from.Learn correct technique, nail those scales and chord shapes, sharpen up your sense of rhythm, dip your toe into composing basslines and study the work of those who went before us. Evolve a structured and fulfilling practice schedule and discover your role as custodian of the low end.The formal bit:Teacher ProfileInitially self-taught, Brian started professional bass guitar lessons in 1990, spending four years studying with Joe Hubbard; one of the foremost bass guitar teachers in Britain (he still teaches today). The knowledge and experience gained with Joe has been invaluable during Brian’s playing career, and he now wishes to share that journey with others, whether they are just starting out or have travelled some way already.Brian’s own teaching experience includes one-to-one and small group lessons, and coaching for bass guitar grade exams, both in-person and online. Subject areas include technique and instrument knowledge, rhythm studies, scales and arpeggios, bassline analysis and basic music and harmony theory. Brian is qualified to Grade 8 on the bass guitar, and holds a Level 6 professional diploma in instrumental teaching (LRSL accreditation). A student charter, first aid certificate and policies covering child and data protection are available to view on request.Instrumentalist ProfileBrian performed regularly as a semi-professional with pop/rock covers bands through the 1980s and beyond.During the early 90s, Brian commissioned two hand-built 6-string bass guitars (fretted and fretless), which were constructed by master craftsman Jeff Finch. For a period of twelve years from 1992, Brian was a full-time musician and member of several bands, playing pop, folk, country, ceilidh, soul and originals.Since 2004, Brian has been playing on a semi-professional basis with various bands and he has recently resumed more regular musical activities.
