About Andre Lindsey
Hi, I’m Andre Lindsey, founder and drum coach at Melbourne Drumming School in Kew, Victoria. My passion is helping students of all ages and abilities discover the excitement, confidence and lifelong enjoyment that comes from playing the drums. Whether you’re picking up a pair of drumsticks for the very first time or preparing for advanced performance goals, my lessons are designed to help you succeed in a relaxed, encouraging and highly personalised environment.
I’ve been playing drums for over 16 years and have spent the last 4+ years teaching students ranging from young beginners through to adults returning to music later in life. Every student learns differently, which is why I don’t believe in a “one-size-fits-all” teaching approach. Instead, I develop individual lesson plans that match each student’s goals, learning style and musical interests.
My teaching combines strong technical foundations with practical musicianship. I teach the Rockschool syllabus for RSL Awards, providing students with a clear, structured pathway to develop their skills and work towards internationally recognised music examinations if they choose. I also have experience with traditional examination pathways and structured learning, allowing students to build excellent reading skills, technique, rhythm and musical understanding while still keeping lessons engaging and enjoyable.
I believe learning the drums should be inspiring. That’s why lessons include playing along with real songs, developing groove, timing, coordination, improvisation and performance confidence—not just practising exercises. Students learn how to apply their skills in real musical situations, making every lesson practical and rewarding.
My own musical experience extends well beyond the teaching studio. I’ve performed with the Victorian Scout Brass Big Band, worked as a pit drummer with the Victorian Showtime Theatre Band, performed samba percussion with O’Ziriguidum Escola de Samba, and trained with the D2 Drumline in Melbourne. These experiences have exposed me to a wide variety of musical styles including rock, pop, funk, blues, jazz, theatre, Latin percussion and contemporary ensemble performance. I’ve also gained valuable live performance and studio recording experience, allowing me to share real-world insights with my students.
Students appreciate that my lessons balance discipline with fun. While we work on technique, reading, rudiments, coordination and musical development, we also make time to learn favourite songs, develop creativity and celebrate milestones along the way. Building confidence is just as important as building technique, and watching students achieve goals they once thought impossible is one of the most rewarding parts of my job.
I teach children, teenagers and adults, including complete beginners and experienced drummers looking to refine their skills. Whether your goal is to:
- Learn drums for fun
- Play in a school band
- Join a rock band
- Prepare for performances
- Improve timing and technique
- Work towards graded music examinations
- Build confidence behind the drum kit
I’ll help you develop the skills and confidence to get there.
Lessons take place in my fully equipped teaching studio in Kew, where students learn on quality acoustic drum kits in a welcoming, professional environment. I also believe communication with parents is important for younger students, providing regular feedback and guidance to help support practice at home.
One of the things that sets Melbourne Drumming School apart is the genuine community we’ve built. Many students stay with me for years, progressing from complete beginners to confident performers. I enjoy seeing students develop not only as drummers but also as more confident, disciplined and creative people.
Music has given me incredible opportunities throughout my life, and I’m passionate about helping others experience those same rewards. My goal isn’t simply to teach people how to play the drums—it’s to help them enjoy music, express themselves creatively and develop skills that last a lifetime.
If you’re looking for a patient, enthusiastic and experienced drum teacher who will tailor every lesson to your goals while making learning enjoyable, I’d love to help you begin your drumming journey.
