Robert is a Doctor of music and an internationally recognised composer, musician and writer. After completing his PhD in music he established a successful private teaching practice in Stockport and South Manchester. His students and clients range from beginners (children and adults) right through to experienced professionals and teachers. Robert has been teaching for over 20 years, both privately and as a University Lecturer. He has experience of preparing students for performances and auditions (for example, Chetham’s, Leeds Conservatoire, RNCM), and exams up to diploma level, with a 100% ABRSM examination pass rate (usually with distinction). Recent success stories include students who achieved 99 (out of 100) for ABRSM Grade 5 Theory and 146 (out of 150) for Piano Practical. One of his students’ was invited to take part in a special concert organised by the ABRSM after they achieved one of the highest marks during the Spring period. Robert’s students have been successful prize winners in various music competitions and have attained excellent results during school and college examinations – for example, many have achieved A* in their GCSE music exams. Lessons can be configured to support and complement work undertaken for GCSE and AS/A level music examinations etc. They can also be designed to improve general musicianship, including sight reading, aural skills, improvisation, and aspects of composition. Robert has had success with students of all ages and abilities, from 3 to 75. Teaching methods are adapted to suit the student, involving an analysis of both the way a student learns music and the way that they perform. Strategies can then be developed to overcome specific musical and technical difficulties or to find a suitable approach to the music in question. In relation to this, Robert has an awareness of various relaxation techniques that can be used to enhance general pianistic technique. He is also able to help with issues of performance anxiety, and can suggest various strategies and techniques to reduce or minimise its effects. Aspects of sound production and quality of tone are also covered during lessons (Robert has a particular affinity with the Romantic and Impressionistic repertoire, especially the works of Chopin, Debussy and Scriabin). As a composer, Robert is often very interested in the way that a specific piece of music has been constructed, providing a piece-by-piece analytical commentary for students, including background information on the composer and the context of the works composition. This helps to create an informed interpretation, including an understanding of both the architecture of a piece and the musical ideas contained within it, leading to a more effective communication of the music. In addition to piano lessons, Robert offers tuition in composition, electronic music, music production, music history and music theory. He can work with any of the major communication platforms including FaceTime, Skype, Teams, WhatsApp, and Zoom. Lessons can also be conducted over the phone – Robert recently helped a student to achieve a distinction for ABRSM Grade 7 performance through regular phone lessons (without video). Clarinetist, Saxophonist and Pianist recently relocated to Stockport having finished a year of teaching in Malaysia and performing in Singapore and New York. I have worked for music services for 6 years teaching instrumentally and this past year held the post of Musician in Residence at Marlborough College Malaysia. As a performer, I have worked professionally on the West End and Broadway. I played Clarinet for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s promenade production of Julius Caesar and have worked under the baton of Marin Alsop, the only female conductor to have conducted The Last Night of The Proms. As a pianist, I have accompanied the Tony Award-winning singer, Michael McElroy and the Broadway Boys whilst in New York and I also took part in workshops with the Broadway casts of The Lion King and Wicked. As a saxophonist, I have performed at famous Jazz clubs, BBkings and Swing46. All these experiences have taught me invaluable lessons that I have brought to my teaching and can bring to you as students. As an educator, I pride myself on getting genuine enjoyment from all the students I teach. I welcome students of any age, as I have experience teaching ages 4+ on a variety of instruments, and I have extensive experience working with SEND pupils, specifically tutoring young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. I get great enjoyment from teaching beginner’s piano but also thrive off mentoring post-grade 8 students to achieve a higher level of playing. I have entered students for ABRSM and Trinity College Exams, but for those that just want to try something new that is great also! During my undergraduate degree, I worked as a musical director around Yorkshire. Through this, I gained several skills I have applied to my teaching, especially in the recent online format. The creation of rehearsal tracks, fun exercises, and video tutorials to follow at home. When directing pantomimes, I became very proficient with logic pro and in the creating of virtual ensemble videos using Final Cut Pro. These skills have aided my teaching massively, particularly for my pop students as I am able to record them so they can create their own album. Even during Covid-19, I can edit performances of my students together so they can still enjoy a version of ensemble performance. Whatever you wish to get out of music lessons, I personalize my teaching methods to each student and endeavour to help you achieve your goals. Music Qualifications & Achievements: Currently studying MMus in Performance at Royal Northern College of Music BA (Hons) in Music from Leeds Conservatoire, first class classification and receiving the Joseph Stones Prize for highest degree mark in the graduating class Principal study, Clarinet under Hannah McCabe Second study, Jazz Saxophone under Jim Correy and Classical Saxophone under Sarah Markham Grade 8 Distinction in Clarinet, ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction in Piano, Trinity College London Certificate in International Child Protection I’ve always been an enthusiastic educator having received the Dennes-Gilkes memorial award for ‘Services in music to the community’ and I’ve been blessed with a successful performing career. As I return to university to further my own performance education, it is working with students that I will miss dearly from teaching full-time in Malaysia and is my main motivation to build-up my private student portfolio. My biggest performance achievements include performing as a soloist at the Leeds Direct Arena and at the Leeds BBC Venue premiering new works for International Women’s Day. My career highlights are the achievements of my students, ranging from a clarinetist who is now going on to study at Leeds Conservatoire with a scholarship and a 5-year-old pianist who during lockdown recorded himself performing a 20-second piece which was then used in a school online concert (much to his and my delight).

Piano lessons: what to expect
Piano lessons near you
Great piano lessons combine structured technical development with repertoire that inspires you. Search by location to find local teachers for in-person tuition, or choose online lessons to access specialist tutors in your chosen style.
Who piano lessons are for
Piano suits learners of all ages — children, teens, adults and returning players. Lessons can be tailored to beginners, hobbyists, exam candidates, and aspiring performers.
What you’ll learn in piano lessons
Lessons focus on technique, rhythm, reading, ear training, and musical expression. Teachers create progressive plans so you consistently improve week-to-week.
Online vs in-person piano lessons
Online lessons are effective for repertoire, theory and technique when recorded materials and clear audio/video setup are used. In-person lessons offer direct physical guidance and instrument-specific coaching.
A simple learning path for piano
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Develop posture, hand position, basic sight-reading, simple scales and arpeggios, and a practice routine that builds consistent progress.
Expand technique with scales, arpeggios and exercises; learn pieces across styles and build expressive playing and musicality.
Refine interpretation, explore improvisation or accompaniment, and prepare confidently for exams, recitals, or studio sessions.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- A reliable upright or digital piano with weighted keys is ideal — full-size 88-key preferred.
- Piano bench at the correct height helps maintain relaxed posture and technique.
- A metronome and a simple practice plan (20–40 minutes daily) yield far better results than occasional long sessions.
