My advice to you, reading here and looking for a teacher, is to get in contact and let’s start a real conversation. I’m going to be writing a lot of the usual stuff underneath this, as indeed you would expect… it is important for you to see my experience and qualifications etc. However, the bottom line is that I feel that you’ll get a better sense of who a teacher is when you start a dialogue with them. If you talk with me, or come visit me for a trial lesson, you’ll hear my passion for music education, and my love of music goes beyond anything that could be written in a formal setting. It’s who I am. And it’s that love of music that I want to pass on to my students. I had a teacher who did that for me, and I very much feel I am paying that forward. So here we go… I began teaching through the National Youth Music Camps in 2002, and expanded into private tuition in 2004. My main areas of expertise centre around piano, keyboard, guitars (including bass), composition, music theory and music production. Teaching has been my great privilege and I enjoy immensely guiding the students who arrive at my door to become the best they can be, helping them find their own path. Not every student wants to follow an exam based path. I have created many bespoke lesson plans and pathways for those individuals who want a less formal approach. For those who choose a path that requires qualifications, I have a strong track record of exam results through ABRSM, Trinity, RSL, through all grades and a couple of ATCL diplomas. Some of my former students have gone on to study music at various institutions including Guildhall, Royal Northern, Goldsmiths, BIMM and ACM. Many are now actively working in the music business today, in original bands, as composers, educators, academics and performers in the west end. A little bit of my background. I studied piano, guitar and clarinet in my youth, achieving Grade 8 and playing and singing in local bands. I became principal clarinettist of the Shropshire Youth Wind Orchestra. I hold a bachelors degree in music (University of Leeds, 2002) and a masters degree in composition (University of Chichester, 2023). For 10 years I taught in a secondary school, covering GCSE (guiding students through performance, composition and critical listening skills) and BTEC (working to a brief, research, analysis, music business focused knowledge and skills). I am an active performer, playing keyboards and guitars in theatres and festivals nationwide, and playing at corporate events, balls and private bookings. 2025 Highlights included Glasgow Pavilion, MK Bowl, Buxton Opera House and Cowes Week on the Isle of Wight. My production music is regularly used on TV (BBC, Sky and channel Five.) and I have composed classical works which have been performed and published internationally. So there you have it. Get in touch and talk to me. I promise you I have sat down and considered everything I have written here (I don’t believe in using AI to write up my own story!). Thanks for reading, and if I don’t hear from you, all the best for your journey ahead.

Piano lessons: what to expect
Piano lessons near you
Great piano lessons combine structured technical development with repertoire that inspires you. Search by location to find local teachers for in-person tuition, or choose online lessons to access specialist tutors in your chosen style.
Who piano lessons are for
Piano suits learners of all ages — children, teens, adults and returning players. Lessons can be tailored to beginners, hobbyists, exam candidates, and aspiring performers.
What you’ll learn in piano lessons
Lessons focus on technique, rhythm, reading, ear training, and musical expression. Teachers create progressive plans so you consistently improve week-to-week.
Online vs in-person piano lessons
Online lessons are effective for repertoire, theory and technique when recorded materials and clear audio/video setup are used. In-person lessons offer direct physical guidance and instrument-specific coaching.
A simple learning path for piano
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Develop posture, hand position, basic sight-reading, simple scales and arpeggios, and a practice routine that builds consistent progress.
Expand technique with scales, arpeggios and exercises; learn pieces across styles and build expressive playing and musicality.
Refine interpretation, explore improvisation or accompaniment, and prepare confidently for exams, recitals, or studio sessions.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- A reliable upright or digital piano with weighted keys is ideal — full-size 88-key preferred.
- Piano bench at the correct height helps maintain relaxed posture and technique.
- A metronome and a simple practice plan (20–40 minutes daily) yield far better results than occasional long sessions.
