I teach the piano through demonstration and listening. In the same way as children learn to speak before they read words, we learn skills and play songs before reading music. It's simple and works particularly well for younger children. I believe that everyone has musical potential which can be realised if it is nurtured in the right way. Just as we learn to sculpt the sounds we make, potential itself must be cultivated carefully if it is to become something beautiful. A child needs the support of their teacher and parent for this to happen. Adults benefit from a supportive community. I am a Suzuki-trained piano teacher (European Suzuki Association) with extensive experience. I currently hold positions at Magdalen College School and Dragon School, Oxford. Past positions include Radley College, Cleaves School and Surrey County Arts. I am a Music graduate of the University of Manchester, UK. Who I teach I teach children and adults from the beginning. If you have learnt before, I will assess your level, choose appropriate pieces for you and issue you with recordings to learn from so you can take part in studio play-togethers. The Suzuki repertoire forms the core of my teaching and it is what all my group lessons are based on. How I teach In the early stages, I teach by ear and demonstration only. Once your ears have begun to attune to the sound of the piano and your technique is in place, we start reading music. Why this order? Listening is how sound is received, so it is ultimately through listening that we refine our art as musicians at every level. By training my pupils to listen, I empower them with musically response-ability from day 1. Piano in Community My experience is that community is a huge motivator for playing an instrument. For this reason, I offer a weekly online studio play-together which all my students are invited to. Here we review all the repertoire we have learnt, together. For children, I also give a weekly group lesson where we play games with our pieces together and learn music theory. For adults, I have an online platform to connect with me and other students to share progress, challenges and cheer each other on. Online/In Person I teach adults online and in person at my studio in Headington, Oxford. I only teach children in person.
My name is Angelica and I am a professional piano teacher based here in central Oxford. I have been teaching the piano for many years, helping students from all backgrounds to develop their musicality and confidence. I would be delighted to help you to learn to play the piano as well. I started playing the piano and cello at the age of four. As my interest in music developed I was delighted to win a scholarship at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music aged eleven. At eighteen I won an exhibition to the Royal College of Music to further her studies to a professional level. During these studies, I was exceptionally lucky to have been taught the piano by the late Peter Wallfisch whose musical knowledge and techniques were inspirational. Having spent fourteen years in Malta playing with the Malta Philharmonic, I came back to the UK to bring up my children several years ago. Since returning I have taught at St Clare’s, Oxford and Cokethorpe School, Witney as well as teaching privately at my home. I offer lessons for students from the ages 5 upwards, with many younger learners and adults attending lessons. Lessons are tailored to the requirements of the individual and are fun! I believe that enjoying learning to play is the most important aspect when learning anything. Because of this, I like to make sure my lessons are as enjoyable as possible for the learner.

Piano lessons: what to expect

Who piano lessons are for
Piano suits learners of all ages — children, teens, adults and returning players. Lessons can be tailored to beginners, hobbyists, exam candidates, and aspiring performers.
What you’ll learn in piano lessons
Lessons focus on technique, rhythm, reading, ear training, and musical expression. Teachers create progressive plans so you consistently improve week-to-week.
Online vs in-person piano lessons
Online lessons are effective for repertoire, theory and technique when recorded materials and clear audio/video setup are used. In-person lessons offer direct physical guidance and instrument-specific coaching.
A simple learning path for piano
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Develop posture, hand position, basic sight-reading, simple scales and arpeggios, and a practice routine that builds consistent progress.
Expand technique with scales, arpeggios and exercises; learn pieces across styles and build expressive playing and musicality.
Refine interpretation, explore improvisation or accompaniment, and prepare confidently for exams, recitals, or studio sessions.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- A reliable upright or digital piano with weighted keys is ideal — full-size 88-key preferred.
- Piano bench at the correct height helps maintain relaxed posture and technique.
- A metronome and a simple practice plan (20–40 minutes daily) yield far better results than occasional long sessions.
