I pride myself in being a great listener who caters for each student’s needs individually, whether the lessons are for fun, grades or profession. I can set out termly plans to achieve goals but also enjoy the spontaneity of covering whatever the student wants to learn in each lesson. I advocate curiosity and self-discovery and I like to help students find out what sparks their interest and creativity. I started teaching university students, one to one, while studying at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge in 2015 and have since progressed to be able to teach a variety of age groups, from infant to mature. Christopher is an award-winning jazz pianist with twenty years of experience. Having also been trained classically, his style is a blend of the two disciplines, lending him a sought-after uniqueness and creativity. Having led a variety of ensembles, either under his own name or on behalf of others (e.g. conducting big bands run by others), Christopher is accustomed to managing the various needs of the ensemble whilst also ensuring that the minutiae of the performance are being attended to, teaching members of said ensembles jazz standards, tempos and general playing philosophies. What’s more, having been the resident pianist and leader of a weekly jazz jam for many years, Christopher would work alongside a variety of musicians, some of whom had never performed onstage at all before that night. Therefore, he became acclimatised to finding a pattern of speaking that was soothing to said musicians, whilst also learning a pragmatic approach to providing emotional support that was intrinsically bolstering to amateur musicians. Furthermore, as a leader, he was often looked to for advice that was both technical and philosophical in nature, making Christopher well-versed in helping amateur musicians eruditely, efficiently, and effectively. As a tutor, Christopher has experience hosting, and teaching, a variety of students face-to-face at his own home, teaching both classical and jazz, and has a familiarity with the standards and practices that ensure the hosted student feels comfortable, safe and secure. He also has a familiarity with teaching students at their homes, having taught students of a wide range of ages and abilities in this way. What’s more, the COVID crisis necessitated that he also acquired an awareness of methodologies that work online with respect to teaching. As a professional, gigging musician, Christopher has witnessed first-hand the extent to which music is a source of joy – therefore, Christopher’s philosophy is one of nurturance and patience as, if the willingness to learn is coming from a joyful and exuberant place, one should not feel punished for, for example, not having found time to have practised that week. Christopher will work at your pace, ensuring you feel comfortable and secure at every step of the process.

Piano lessons: what to expect
Piano lessons near you
Great piano lessons combine structured technical development with repertoire that inspires you. Search by location to find local teachers for in-person tuition, or choose online lessons to access specialist tutors in your chosen style.
Who piano lessons are for
Piano suits learners of all ages — children, teens, adults and returning players. Lessons can be tailored to beginners, hobbyists, exam candidates, and aspiring performers.
What you’ll learn in piano lessons
Lessons focus on technique, rhythm, reading, ear training, and musical expression. Teachers create progressive plans so you consistently improve week-to-week.
Online vs in-person piano lessons
Online lessons are effective for repertoire, theory and technique when recorded materials and clear audio/video setup are used. In-person lessons offer direct physical guidance and instrument-specific coaching.
A simple learning path for piano
A good teacher will tailor lessons to your goals — but here’s what progress often looks like.
Develop posture, hand position, basic sight-reading, simple scales and arpeggios, and a practice routine that builds consistent progress.
Expand technique with scales, arpeggios and exercises; learn pieces across styles and build expressive playing and musicality.
Refine interpretation, explore improvisation or accompaniment, and prepare confidently for exams, recitals, or studio sessions.
Getting started: what you need
Keep it simple at first — your teacher can help you choose the right setup.
- A reliable upright or digital piano with weighted keys is ideal — full-size 88-key preferred.
- Piano bench at the correct height helps maintain relaxed posture and technique.
- A metronome and a simple practice plan (20–40 minutes daily) yield far better results than occasional long sessions.
