Lessons Tailored To You
My name is Jonno Gaze and I am a percussionist, composer and improviser based in Birmingham, UK. Born in 1999, I grew up playing djembe and drum-kit with friends and family, singing songs and making lots of noise! At school, I played in bands and orchestras before finding musicians who really inspired me to make music. From 2016-2017 I was an Aldeburgh Young Musician, where I was lucky enough to meet musicians from different cultures all over the world who celebrated creativity, collaboration and the artistic nature of every individual.

Apply Music Theory to the Drums
When it comes to drumming, many people think it’s just about hitting the drums with sticks and keeping time—and while rhythm is key, there’s so much more you can bring to the table by understanding music theory. Music theory provides the foundation that helps you truly understand what you’re playing. It allows you to connect to the music on a deeper level, communicate effectively with other musicians, and expand your creativity behind the kit.
Applying Music Theory
Learning how to play with the help of music theory means more than just keeping the beat. Having a grasp of concepts like time signatures, dynamics, and song structure can transform the way you approach your lessons and practice sessions. Whether you’re taking private lessons with a drum tutor like me or learning online, these skills are crucial to progress. Music theory also makes it easier for beginner students to read drum notation, understand grooves, and even prepare for exams if that’s part of their musical goals.
For Drummers of All Ages and Interests
From school children picking up their first sticks to dedicated students aiming to join a band or group, everyone gains something valuable by incorporating music theory into their learning process. Even if your goal is simply to find joy in playing drums as a hobby, knowing these fundamentals will enhance your enjoyment and open up a world of possibilities. Tuition that emphasises music theory isn’t just for exams—many music teachers, including myself, believe it’s a way to unlock the creative potential of every pupil.

Know Your Way Around the Drum Kit
The Snare Drum
The snare drum is at the heart of any drum kit—think of it as your central voice. It sits right in front of me and delivers that crisp, punchy snap that you'll hear in almost every song. The snare plays a key role in defining groove and adding character to your playing. By learning to control its dynamics and using techniques like rimshots and ghost notes, you can really elevate your sound.
The Bass Drum
Often referred to as the kick drum, the bass drum is the kit's foundation, grounding the rhythm with deep, low-end thumps. When I step on the pedal, it's all about timing and steady control; that "boom" is what drives the beat. Whether you're playing subtle jazz or high-energy rock, the bass drum is your steady pulse.
The Toms
Toms bring richness and variety to the kit—they're my go-to for fills and transitions. Depending on the setup, you'll usually have a high tom, mid tom, and a floor tom. Each one has a distinct tone ranging from sharp and bright to deep and resonant, and they allow me to add flair to my playing.
The Hi-Hats
The hi-hats are incredibly versatile—they can be played closed for tight, precise beats or open for a washy, cymbal-like sound. Positioned to my left, they're controlled with a foot pedal and sticks, offering endless creative possibilities. I often use the hi-hats to establish the groove or add texture to my patterns.
The Cymbals
Rounding out the kit, the cymbals include the crash, ride, and sometimes extra effects like splash or china cymbals. Each has its own unique role—the crash adds drama and emphasis, while the ride provides a steady rhythm or shimmering patterns. For me, cymbals are like the punctuation marks in drumming, adding energy and expression to every phrase.

When it comes to learning the drums, it's all about building confidence and finding your rhythm, and that’s where I can help. My tailored drum lessons are designed to suit each student’s unique goals and abilities. Whether you’re picking up the sticks for the first time or looking to refine your existing skills, my focus is always on creating a supportive, fun, and productive learning environment. I’m passionate about helping every student unlock their full potential behind the kit.
