Welcome to
Hello, my name is Emma Stannard and I am a professional opera singer and singing teacher based in Brighton. I teach in-person from the Under the Bridge Studios (Brighton) and also offer online sessions (via Skype or Zoom).
Hello, my name is Emma and I teach singing online and in-person from the Under the Bridge studios in Brighton. I have worked as a singing teacher for a number of years and teach all ages and abilities. Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced singer, I can help you to develop your vocal technique and find your voice.
Since graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, I have worked extensively as a professional opera both in the UK and internationally. This experience informs my teaching, enabling me to offer tuition that both develops vocal technique and addresses all areas of performance.

Singing lessons are tailored to each individual and are available for all ages and abilities. Each lesson will begin with vocal exercises to warm-up the voice and build technical understanding. We will then explore specially selected repertoire that will continue to develop your range and breath control.
Alternatively, if you are working towards a performance (either solo or as part of a choir/group), we can work on this together. In lessons you will: – Build your vocal technique through carefully selected exercises. – Learn repertoire that inspires you. – Improve breath control and posture. – Maximise your vocal health by learning how to warm-up your voice. – Increase confidence and develop an understanding of stage craft. – Develop your understanding of musical notation. … and much more!
Lessons are pay-as-you-go, weekly, fortnightly or as suits you.
I welcome students of all abilities. I think that lessons should always be enjoyable and I aim to provide fun lessons regardless of your playing level.
Since 2018, I have had the pleasure of teaching singing to a large number of students. Every individual comes to singing lessons for a different reason and I ensure that each lesson is tailored to the student and focussed upon their goals (whether this be for the enjoyment of developing a new skill or working towards a performance…).
I have a first class BMus (Hons) in vocal studies and a Master of Music with distinction in solo performance from the Royal Northern College of Music, as well as an Advanced Diploma from Royal Academy Opera. Since graduating, I have sung with companies including English Touring Opera, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Opera Holland Park and appear regularly on the concert platform in performances of oratorio and song repertoire.
My continued work as a professional singer supports my teaching, ensuring that I am continually improving my craft and allowing me to draw upon experience within lessons.
For those at the beginning of their singing journey, lessons will initially explore posture and breathing for singing before learning how to healthily warm-up the voice. Through a series of exercises you will begin to develop your vocal range and technical ability.
Repertoire will then be selected and explored to further your technical development and to provide performance experience. Alongside welcoming beginner students, I am able to teach both intermediate and more advanced singers. Continued technical work ensures that singers use their breath correctly; continue developing their vocal range and avoid unwanted habits forming.
I coach repertoire with those seeking stylistic input, ensuring that text is delivered effectively and considering aspects of performance. I also support with preparation for auditions; the pronunciation of operatic repertoire and can offer stage craft advice for those performing in shows.
I welcome students of all ages to take my lessons. My lessons will always be built around your needs and together we will develop a healthy technique as well as an all round better skill level. I'm always happy to answer any questions so please feel free to get in touch.
