I tend to deliberately overbook and use those slots as “yellow light” slots for people that book on the fly. So whenever a flight risk does cancel I can text one of my week to week bookings and say “can you do tomorrow at this time” and they’re all good for it. Try to fill their slot and let them know that this is what’s going to happen as you are losing money.

I’ve found just emailing various schools (specifically music department heads) is the best way. Secondary schools are more into it than Primary. Offering a free workshop or masterclass is a good place to start, but out right asking if they need any resident tutors will get you a definite answer. A lot of schools usually have tutors and hold on to them for years (the Secondary school I went to still has their drum tutor after 10 years), but it can’t hurt to ask. Sometimes they will even keep you on record and update you with any vacancies available.

I’ve only had it twice. I guess I make myself seem busier than I actually am.

On quite a few occasions I’ve found that people don’t check their emails when contacting through the website. If they give a phone number, it’s usually a good idea to call or text them when you’ve sent them an email, to let them know it’s there and waiting with the information they need. This has improved my bookings by quite a bit.

First up, my hypotheses. 1st is they might have just had a full roster of tutors for your area and didn’t need another, and have not communicated this well. 2nd is they might have seen you are on this platform and have a clause that says you can’t go with another platform. I know some platforms have a written exclusivity clause.

Second up, don’t feel like having a degree means anything. I have an under grad and a post grad degree and there’s a drum tutor in my city that is so successful off of playing the basics he is completely fully booked and has 2 other drum tutors in his employ earning him money, as well as doing band lead stuff for a council charity. He has some minor fame behind him, and that’s what gets him the living. Formal education is fine for training but it ultimately means nothing if you don’t have a reputation, so try to not take it personally. You may well be a more skilled performer and tutor, but it doesn’t always mean you’ll get the offers.
