About

About

As a tutor, I strive to develop a students passion and creativity in whatever their goals may be. My approach to teaching is to teach the student the fundamental language of rhythm, drumming and music, and how to apply this creatively in any way they see fit. This means you’ll not only learn what you want to learn, but you will be able to play so much more outside of what you even thought you would be able to do.

I have achieved a BA Hons in Music Performance and an MA in Creative Practice, which focused on the neurology, biology and physiology of drumming, and its effects on the body, brain and mind. This has influenced my teaching style to a degree that allows me to really delve deep into technique, posture, learning methods and easy practice hacks to make your life as a musician much easier.

I have a wealth of knowledge from travelling and working within the music industry, having recorded in some legendary locations such as Sun Studios in Memphis, teaching at the Stax Music Academy, and touring across Europe as both a technician and performer. I have performed in a wide variety of settings from live performances, recordings, videos and musical theatre. If grading is your goal, I teach every grade, and have the facilities to prepare you for your exam environment and beyond.

I have been learning drums for just over two years now and Tom is the best teacher that anyone who is learning drums could want . He gets a lot of things done in a lesson and can still has a laugh when doing so . Tom has a very broad range of knowledge and skills when it comes to drumming which inspires me to be just like him . It’s really fun to learn from him .

I am completely new to drumming and Tom has been a great teacher. He has such a wealth of knowledge on technique, the psychology behind drumming and then actual creativity. I leave every lesson feeling as if time has flown by. He even took the time to recommend drum sets that I could buy once I was ready to get my own set.

It took me over 6 months to decide that and in the meantime, Tom’s studio had everything necessary to learn how to play.

Tom has been an excellent teacher, I am not the quickest learner and he has been very patient and supportive which has made me feel a lot more confident and comfortable playing.

Tom is an incredibly thoughtful and compassionate teacher, as well as having immense skill which makes him an overall amazing teacher. Not only has he developed my physical skills with the drums but also mentally, as sometimes while playing I can overthink and doubt myself. But Tom always reassures me. I would defo recommend if you are interested!!

Having self-taught drums for the last 10 years, there are some thing I can pick up quickly and do fairly well, and other skills that one might consider fundamental that are far from as strong as they could/should be at this point. I also play for fun, not grades.

While I’ve not had any other teachers I’ve found Tom’s style to work well – the lessons flex and adapt to needs – and if I’m finding something more challenging then it’s not pushed, which keeps it all quite fun.

The mix of grade pieces (as a means of benchmarking) along with rudiments and other technique-based exercises works well for me.

~11 months in and I feel I’ve come a long way in a short time.

”Having always wanted to play the drums but never having the opportunity, I sought out Tom for lessons and I can say I am not disappointed that I chose him to begin teaching me. Tom is an excellent drum teacher, even if he is modest, he always made time for me last minute and was incredibly flexible around my schedule. The lessons were very informal and relaxed and in just 4 hours (8 lessons) we managed to cover a variety of techniques including reading music, basic rudiments and training of the hands and feet, as well as building beats and fills. Tom has given me the confidence to continue pushing myself and has fully equipped me with the tools I need to continue learning the drums.”

”My husband and my 11-year-old son share my interest in heavy, thrash and death metal. We decided we wanted a family activity that we could all take part in. We found Tom who had the same musical taste and was willing to teach all three of us. So we’ve been having weekly drum lessons. We are all developing at different paces and Tom recognises when we need more help and when we are ready to progress. We’ve been covering the basic rudiments and getting started on the right track. Tom is a very talented drummer and a competent and thoughtful teacher. We are all really enjoying our lessons.”

”My name is Thomas and I am 11 years old. I have been drumming with Tom over a year now. My lessons are in Tom’s house which is a warm and friendly atmosphere. Tom breaks things down into smaller bits which help me to pick things up. He gives really good examples and has lots of tips and advice to help make things easier. he is honest about things that I will find hard but encourages me to stick to it, and is understanding when I get frustrated. I really enjoy my lessons with Tom and the time passes really quickly.”

”Tom has taught our son drums for the last 3 years, during which time his lessons have provided excellent musical knowledge and experience across various types of music. His work has been a major factor in the successful development of our son’s musical skills and appreciation, helping him focus on the theory and rudiments as well as developing his listening skills to understand and play along with different styles of songs. His style of teaching has helped improve confidence and develop the appreciation of how to practise, patience and listening can help break down the trickiest beat and how that can then be applied to create your own music.

I can confidently recommend Tom as a friendly, knowledgeable and reliable music teacher and expert in his field.”
