Need help about cancellations (All Teachers)
Posted by Lydia Hedjazi on November 17, 2018 at 3:36 pmHi guys! Got a really awkward student.
He’s been with me around 4 months, always been really rubbish with cancellations, I have a 48 cancellation policy in place for the full fee.
I’ve let him off a few times and totally re arranged my schedule to fit him in!
He’s cancelled the last 4 times, and is now criticising my policy and saying ‘ I’m not ethnical’ and have no compassion basically as he is now saying he has a ‘medical condition’.
Really not getting through to him about my policy and now want to just disregard him from lessons all together as I’ve had enough! Has anyone had to do this? If so how did you go around doing it? 😡

Hi, yes, have had quite a few students whom I didnt want for various reasons, and simply advised I cannot add value to their learning process anymore and thus recommended looking for other tutoring services. I have also occasionally advised my schedules changed and therefore I couldn’t accommodate them anymore. Best wishes🙂

I tend to deliberately overbook and use those slots as “yellow light” slots for people that book on the fly. So whenever a flight risk does cancel I can text one of my week to week bookings and say “can you do tomorrow at this time” and they’re all good for it. Try to fill their slot and let them know that this is what’s going to happen as you are losing money.

Yes… Tell him your full and say he would be better with a teacher that is able to be “more flexible”

I use an online booking system and can update my slots as and when, it also takes payment for the lesson on booking.. for those that can’t commit it’s up to them to book in themselves on the calender and if there isn’t slots there isn’t slots.. you will probably find the ones that want to be flexible will drop off the radar and then.. you can keep the regular ones but if they don’t and genuinely work different shift patterns then they will fill your last min cancellation slots and it works well for everyone

Just the fact he has been so rude about it after I have done a lot for him.
Never mind, thanks for your advice guys!👍
If he ever gets back in touch I will say I’m full.😄 Thanks!

Just 4get about it. The more opinions on here will put your head away. I’ve had loads. I’m still owed money from a few out there from last year. One being a very wealthy family. Drive a 70 grand Jeep and can’t even pay cash! I just let them go. Life’s simple. If they do it twice they are OUT FULL STOP. You should know that like if it happens twice in a row and they don’t have decency to even offer you something, you have waisters. If I cancel a student I give them one FREE lesson. That’s rare that I have to cancel but with being freelance musician I get last minute work. Let the client know and fit them in asap like the next day for free. Thus meanin they come back same time week after as agreed from the start. Have a good day.

Sometimes it’s best too just them know it’s not working out, and suggest he finds an alternative teacher moving forward! Dealt with……😎as this will free up your valuable teaching time, for another student that commits to the time schedules and appreciates and values your lessons.

Implement a Pay when you book policy. Since I adopted this payment system I haven’t had any problems. Its a neat way of weeding out people who think its ok to mess you about. If you don’t value your own time then how can you expect anyone else too. Sounds harsh, but anyone who is worth teaching will understand and respect it.🙂

Just let them off and write him off completely from your diary! I also had a couple of them previously and they do Not worth any time of yours, honestly! I also had some time wasters who turned up for the first lesson having sent them all the admin infos and completely disregarded them no pay, no next week visit and then suddenly just turned up again and expected the lessons… absolutely no way to let ourselves messing up with these kind of people!

Yes I agree, if everything is set out in writing before they start, then students can’t really say anything about policy etc – I’ve had one situation very similar before and it was horrible but 99.9% of students are lovely, and understand the policy and cancellation terms- and are fine with it!
