Hey all, I was recently rejected twice from music teachers.co.uk, and I must admit it knocked my confidence, I have looked up one of thier tutors on YouTube and found his music rather unremarkable by own standards.

Then again he has a degree..I don’t, but they asked me to submit videos to evaluate my ability. I played (and sang) pieces by Elton John, billy Joel ect, yet they didn’t approve.

Any insights into why I was rejected? I don’t tend to reach out to fellow musicians, but this has bothered me.

I’m comfortable providing YouTube links to gain your critique, just bear in mind I’m not a singer, but I try for what it’s worth.

Ps. Sorry for the half baked profile, it will be completed later.

First up, my hypotheses. 1st is they might have just had a full roster of tutors for your area and didn’t need another, and have not communicated this well. 2nd is they might have seen you are on this platform and have a clause that says you can’t go with another platform. I know some platforms have a written exclusivity clause.

Second up, don’t feel like having a degree means anything. I have an under grad and a post grad degree and there’s a drum tutor in my city that is so successful off of playing the basics he is completely fully booked and has 2 other drum tutors in his employ earning him money, as well as doing band lead stuff for a council charity. He has some minor fame behind him, and that’s what gets him the living. Formal education is fine for training but it ultimately means nothing if you don’t have a reputation, so try to not take it personally. You may well be a more skilled performer and tutor, but it doesn’t always mean you’ll get the offers.
