Welcome to
I’m James Banner, a professional musician and double/electric bass teacher offering in person and online lessons via Skype, Zoom & more.
Learning from home is a convenient and comfortable way to learn an instrument, whether beginner or pro - experience has shown me that students are still able to make a lot of progress even without person to person contact. I have high quality equipment such as a HD camera and studio quality microphone that means there is no detriment to the quality of sound and video.
I design a lesson plan in collaboration with each student and offer free audio/video feedback between lessons (upon request). Instrumental lessons are relaxed and include theory, composition and improvisation from the beginning to help build a well-rounded musician. Improvisation lessons are for all instruments and can be in specific contexts such as jazz, free improvisation, new music interpretation, etc. I also teach composition/music creation professionally at HE level, including sound design, Ableton, making scores and writing for a variety of instruments.

I have experience teaching many styles of music - we can also work together on your own original music or learning songs by your favourite artists.
We will explore the technical and theoretical foundations that underpin the music you are interested in learning so that you are able to develop the skills necessary to continue learning and developing outside of the lessons.
Lessons are pay-as-you-go, weekly, fortnightly or as suits you.
Students of all ability levels will receive a personalised plan for the areas they wish to develop.
James Banner was born in Dudley, England and is now based in Berlin and the UK, working as an improvising musician and composer. He has studied in Birmingham, Paris and Berlin, holds a Masters in music performance/composition and is currently a Senior Lecturer in ensemble performance, improvisation and collaborative composition at Leeds Conservatoire.
He has been performing for over 10 years around Europe as a soloist, sideman and band leader, and is often part of collaborative projects at festivals or music series. His music and performances have been played on BBC Radio, Deutschlandfunk Kultur and BR-Klassik, and he is featured on more than 20 releases.
Lessons are tailored to a student’s personal aims and needs and can focus on technique, posture, theory, composition, improvisation, learning pieces and songs and developing original basslines.
I have experience teaching a wide range of ages and abilities, from complete beginners to professionals working in the industry, ages 9-60 and beyond. 10+ years experience teaching allows me to quickly find areas to improve whilst recognising existing skills and building upon them in a positive and empowering way - this could be, for example, preparing for a grade exam, doing an audition for a band or college, wanting to improve scale and theory knowledge or being able to hear and create your own bass parts.
Here is some information to help you get prepared to take your online double bass lessons.
Speed Test, is a very useful tool as having a stable internet connection is one of the most important parts to these lessons. Here you will be able to see what your speeds are and we will only need a speed of 3mbps to have a stable enough connection for the lessons.
As well as a stable internet connection you will need to have access to some kind of electronic device that has a camera - this could be a laptop, tablet or a smartphone.
Once you have a device ready to go, there are a variety of services we can use to connect for the lessons. The most common and reliable services tend to be Zoom, Skype or Facetime for Apple users. There are other options too (such as WhatsApp) so there is always a solution to work with your preferred programme or device.
