Lessons Tailored To You
For the past 8 years, I’ve been working as a professional musician. This has taken me across the world and regularly takes me across the UK. I’ve got experience in everything from television, radio, recording sessions, big bands, function bands, singer-songwriters, jazz and theatre pits. Have you ever taken a double bass up a very perilous hill to play while someone proposed to their partner? I have! Bass is my specialist instrument, I am not a guitarist who also teaches bass. I was at college studying music and then progressed to University.

Techniques You Can Learn On The Bass Guitar
Fingerstyle Technique
When you join my bass lessons in Glasgow, one of the first techniques I enjoy teaching is the fingerstyle technique. This is a fundamental method where you pluck the strings with your index and middle fingers. It's incredibly versatile and used across genres like rock, jazz, and pop. During our sessions, we'll focus on developing your finger strength, dexterity, and timing. This technique is particularly great for beginners as it lays a solid foundation for more advanced styles.
Slap and Pop
If you're looking to infuse some funk into your playing, the slap and pop technique is a must-learn. I'll guide you through the nuances of slapping the string with your thumb and popping it with your index or middle finger. This creates a percussive and rhythmic sound, which is characteristic of funk music but also finds its way into other genres. During our bass guitar lessons, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to practice slap bass, ensuring you feel confident and can incorporate it seamlessly into your playing.
Using a Pick
Using a pick is another essential technique that I teach, especially useful if you’re interested in rock or punk genres. In our bass guitar lessons together, I'll show you how to hold the pick correctly and strum with precision. We'll start with basic exercises and gradually move on to more complex picking patterns. Many bass guitarists find this technique gives their playing a sharper, more aggressive edge.
Tapping
Taking your bass playing to the next level, tapping is a technique where you tap the strings against the fretboard with your fingers to produce a note. It’s often used for creating fast, intricate solos and can be quite an impressive skill to develop.
In our private lessons, I’ll provide you with tapping exercises that start simple and advance as your comfort level increases. This technique adds a unique flair to your playing and opens the door to more creative expressions.
Harmonics
Harmonics are a beautiful and ethereal sound you can produce on the bass guitar. I'll teach you how to lightly touch the strings at specific points, producing bell-like tones. This technique is not only useful for adding texture to your music but also for impressing in performances and jam sessions. Our bass guitar lessons will include practical exercises to perfect your harmonic playing, making your music more dynamic and intriguing.
Muting Techniques
Mastering muting techniques can really improve the clarity and precision of your bass playing. I’ll demonstrate how to mute strings with both your left and right hands to prevent unwanted noise. These muting techniques are essential whether you’re playing live, recording, or just practising at home. It might seem minor, but effective muting can elevate your playing from good to great.
Combining Techniques
One of the joys of choosing me as your bass teacher is the freedom to explore and combine different techniques. Whether you're using fingerstyle combined with slap and pop, or blending harmonics with tapping, our lessons will be tailored to help you develop a unique and versatile style.
