Welcome! My name is Julia and I am an American violinist and violist teaching online and in Berlin. I graduated with a masters degree in viola performance from The Juilliard School in New York City and have developed my teaching approach through pedagogy programs, teaching fellowships, and many years of private teaching experience.
I am an academist with the Kammerakademie Potsdam, and have performed with ensembles including the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Verbier Festival Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony, the Boston Philharmonic, and the New World Symphony.

Whether you or your child is a complete beginner, returning to the instrument, or looking to take your playing to the next level, I would be thrilled to work with you! I work with people of all ages and backgrounds, and I teach every individual based on their unique experience and goals.
I grew up learning through the Suzuki method, so I teach with an emphasis on developing a good ear as well as good instrumental technique. I teach mainly classical repertoire, but if you are interested in learning other styles, contact me and we can discuss your individual request. I recommend 45 minute or 1 hour sessions, but can also teach 30 minute or 90 minute lessons.
Lessons are pay-as-you-go, weekly, fortnightly or as suits you.
I welcome students of all ability levels to learn with me. I will make a lesson plan that suits your ability level as a learner.
I'm experienced in teaching beginners.
I am a life long musician; I started playing violin at age 5, learning through the Suzuki method, and viola at 16. While earning my Bachelors degree in Biopsychology at Tufts University in Boston, I fell in love with classical music through orchestral performance, and decided to pursue a career as an orchestral musician instead. Nothing brings me greater joy than to see the growth of my students as musicians and people.
Alongside development of technical skills on the violin/viola, I hope to instill a lifelong love of music in my students. I have taught a range of students from complete beginners to more advanced players. My teaching method is based on my own experience as a performer, 5+ years of private teaching, as well as pedagogy courses and teaching fellowships taken while studying at The Juilliard School.
As a violinist and violist, I can offer lessons to individuals seeking to learn both instruments. No matter what your goal is in taking lessons, I look forward to working with you or your child.

I earned my masters in viola performance from The Juilliard School in 2020. I've performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Verbier Festival Orchestra, the Charleston Symphony, the Boston Philharmonic, and the New World Symphony.
I take my experience as a professional musician directly into my lessons, presenting many of the same strategies I use for my own performance to my students. Intermediate or advanced students can expect a focus on how to take the technique you already have and use it to improve your phrasing or learn more difficult repertoire. I can also offer a focus on playing in orchestra or chamber groups. For example, our lessons can focus on sight reading, orchestral excerpts, auditions, or strategies for ensemble playing.
I offer regular time slots for lessons, but also offer flexible/irregular lesson scheduling and a flexible change and cancellation policy. No matter your lifestyle and schedule, we can schedule our lessons around your needs.

My lessons are charged at €35.00 per half hour and €60.00 per hour for all.
I teach in-person lessons from my student's homes, or online lessons from my home. I feel this means everyone can learn from a familiar and comfortable environment.
I teach students of all ages how to play the violin.
I believe that weekly lessons are the best way to improve over a short period of time.
Students can cancel or reschedule without fee up to 24 hours before the scheduled lesson time. Cancellations within 24 hours or no-shows will still be charged full price.
