About Me

About

I am a singing, music and piano teacher of twenty years experience. Previously I sang professionally before settling in the UK to have a family; teaching then came to the forefront.

I enjoy seeing pupils develop and improve; either through graded practical exams or other projects.

My ethos is to encourage positive feelings and self-belief. I guide pupils realistically but never set limits on what they ultimately can achieve. I encourage pupil responsibility for development and enjoyment too.

I lived in London for ten years and busy on the big band circuit: The Royal Marines’ Dance Band, Ray Mc Vay’s Big Band and the Ian Stuart Big Band are some of the bands I worked with. I also sang at jazz festivals in Teignmouth, Great Yarmouth and Brecon. I sang backing vocals on Dave Ballard’s ‘Tribute to Elvis’ tour and did a European anti-drugs tour in Europe on lead vocals with rock band ‘Ripzmag’.

Three years were spent in the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, singing in residence.

When I returned to the UK I settled to have a family; and when my son was a little older, started teaching vocal workshops at Worcester Technical College Saturday Rock School. This coincided with peripatetic vocal teaching at schools for Herefordshire Music Services and teaching vocals and keyboard at Yamaha Music School in Hereford.

While teaching I sang with a six-piece jazz ensemble called ‘Time Enough’.

During a period of studying, I held posts in Worcestershire schools as a teaching assistant.

For eight and a half years until recently, I taught singing and piano at Bromsgrove School of Music.

“We first met Katherine when she started giving lessons to my eldest daughter, Molly (now 17) when she was a middle school. … she now gives both singing and piano lessons to both my children. Molly is now in grade 7 singing. We all think very highly of Katherine and both my children love their lessons … we now think of her as a family friend. …we have found her to be a kind, professional person of high integrity.”

“Kath has been my daughter’s singing and Piano teacher for five years. She is very knowledgeable and has introduced her to a wide range of genres. My daughter really enjoys her lessons with Kath and has progressed exceptionally well under her care. Kath has a wonderful rapport with her pupils, she is sensitive to their needs and knows how to get the best out of them. As a Deputy Head, I know how important a good teacher is and I would not hesitate to recommend Kath to potential pupils.”

“Dear Kath, this is just to say what a wonderful teacher you have been. Considering I am old (65!) and have never played the piano in my life and can’t read music,I feel you have encouraged, supported and taught me so much in the 8 months I have been with you. It has been such good fun. I cannot recommend you highly enough and only wish I lived nearer to you to carry on.”
