So I adjust my warm ups accordingly:
– Nasal scales/arpeggios for the chest voice
– Continuous sirens for the head voice, which avoids any crackle as it has to be a pure tone
– Encourage the student to drop/raise the larynx for each exercise so they can feel how their tone changes and how to get clarity this way
– Get them to feel comfortable with a shouty voice (imagine calling over to someone on the other side of the street) as this triggers the reflex of power your voice makes -
Joking. Warm up together but then the odd bit separately so you can quickly assess who needs more attention with what

My student who needed assistance with the above wants to thank Chris for the tongue sticking out idea as she immediately noticed that it helped. We are currently doing sobby singing too which is proving to be very effective!

Yeah sometimes I can’t get the balance right as they push a little too hard. I mostly just try to demonstrate the gorilla (thyroid tilt in posh language?!) in the way that it can be effortless although well projected without just shouting

I always just call it the gorilla sound, or try and sound like a bloke yet staying high (for the girls!) that’s cool as I’m doing a lot of what’s being mentioned already..!

A bit different with a family as it’s technically the same bank account so I am considering lowering it

This is what I do:
1 hour group lessons –
2 people = £50 (£10 discount)
3 people = £75 (£15 discount)
4 people = £100 (£20 discount)
5 people = £125 (£25 discount) -

I do apologise! I didn’t mean to sound negative. It’s great when a student is that determined and want a good long sesh to really benefit from a teacher. It’s flattering and you can make more money of course:)

I say good for you. I wouldn’t put up with the same person for that long. It’s all about one in, one out in my flat. Aware of how that just sounded, I don’t have a red light in my window or anything.

48 hour notice works fantastically because people understand that it’s my full time job. Also if I wake up ill and cancel last minute, I lose the money too. It’s a fair system.

I do block payments to cover a month, so 2 lessons for fortnightly students and 4 for weekly students. And a 48 hour cancellation policy.

PS. Don’t give grace to anyone. Business is business and bills are bills. Unless someone dies. Then MAYBE I let them off.

No point saying at the next lesson in case they don’t actually show up!

Ok, does the student pay upfront? As this normally solves this as you just keep the money. Always tell the student of this policy in their initial lesson. Really you need to email this student telling them they owe you however many cancelled lessons, using language such as “due to the nature of my business”

Sorry, that is in no way helpful. I sometimes lose hope when people sing like their tongue is swollen or don’t know how to yawn. How do they talk or get through life? Sounds like something Matt Pocock will be more helpful on than me.

Hmmm difficult when I teach from home. It’s the joint singing and piano lessons to begin with, not sure about putting up general prices yet. But the learning of both, how can I explain where the cost is increased..?

Oh good – that is literally what I’m looking for for my new teachers who are experiencing first lesson cancellations (grr!)

I’m really pissed off with the doctor. I saw who I thought was a really good one, who said “right, only come to me now and I’ll monitor all the problems.” (Have allergy issues that are like constant hayfever and rashes) she said she would refer me to an ENT when I asked, as I keep losing my voice and it’s my career. She was understanding and said she’ll be able to get an ENT to see me, and that the one I would see specialises in vocalists. Couldn’t believe my luck! She then prescribed me shit loads of drugs which cost over £30 (walking pharmacy, as usual) which was to sort some stuff out while I waited to hear from ENT. Sure enough, I had a message from the doctor saying the ENT had been in touch and suggested indigestion tablets before I went to see her. Wtf?! So now I’m meant to buy even more drugs which are completely pointless and I already told her I didn’t need?! Can’t get in touch with doc before Tuesday now. Currently ill with a cough and cold, allergy triggered, sick of all the drugs I’m pumping into my body and have no answers and NO ENT!!! (I’m all good for drugs though)

You can’t win; I opted for e-cigs so I could actually be healthier! I don’t understand; it’s only vapour. It probably dries out the throat but why am I only noticing losing my voice now? Unless I’ve just given it a year of gradual e-cig damage. Will be interesting to see what ENT says
