Welcome to
Hi everyone, My name is Michael Redfern & I'm a professional guitar teacher offering high quality guitar lessons in the Islington area for students of all ages. My lessons are student focussed and will be built around the styles and genres that you like to listen to in your spare time. If you have a specific goal or style in mind, please let me know.
I want to bring enjoyment to my lessons. I want to make sure all of my students enjoy learning to play the guitar and always learn in a direction that they want to learn in. This could be techniques you're interested in or a particular style of playing. I also like to promote learning familiar music, this is one of the best ways to improve as a learner and player.
In our lessons together we will improve both your playing and your knowledge of the guitar whilst learning the music and artists that you love to listen to in your spare time. I will make sure we have a decent chat before our lessons about what direction and which styles you enjoy. Alternatively, I'm happy to make suggestions if you need.

I love and enjoy a wide range of genres & styles of music & this is reflected in my teaching style. I can offer lessons in everything from Classical, Pop, Rock, Funk & many more! The direction you learn in is really up to you. Please make sure to let me know what you would like to learn before we start learning.
I have experience in teaching both young learners and adults and believe that music should be for everyone. I will help you learn in a direction that you like regardless of age. I will always make a lesson plan that suits your ability and experience level.
Lessons are pay-as-you-go, weekly, fortnightly or as suits you.
I'm able to teach both beginner and advanced students in a wide range of genres. Get in touch to find out more.
As an accomplished guitarist, I have been fortunate enough to work and perform with top international musicians in a variety of musical genres including jazz, classical, popular and world music, enabling me to experience the artistic and social benefits of different ways of music-making.
This work has seen me perform at a wide variety of top venues such as London’s Ronnie Scotts, The 606 club and Manchester Academy and many more.
I have a firm grounding in both classical and contemporary styles with a particular focus on jazz and improvisation as my specialism. This is something I try to bring to my lessons, encouraging students to find their own voice on the instrument whilst developing core musical skills through a repertoire that they find engaging. I began teaching privately whilst studying music at the university in Manchester, where I was recommended as a teacher for a range of students, including relatives of faculty members from the University music department.
I spent several years employed by Havering Music Services whilst completing my Jazz Guitar Masters at GSMD. HMS was an excellent vehicle for me to further develop my skills and experience in the guitar teaching profession, working with students of much younger ages and in more varied group situations.
My teaching style is largely based around finding what works best for you. Learning the rules but also the best way for you to apply these! Discovering an instrument can be scary and confusing, but I am here to show you how rewarding the journey can be.
Above all else, I want to make sure my students enjoy learning and because of this I will always tailor the lessons around a direction that you want to learn in.
Islington has an awesome range of venues and music stores. Here are some of the best ones I would recommend.
