What do you do during the daytime? (All teachers)
Posted by Beckie Tunnicliffe on June 29, 2024 at 9:49 amHi everyone,
Just got a question for you all – I don’t know how many of you are in a similar position to me in that your evenings are fully booked but your mornings/afternoons are relatively free.
Apart from catching up on admin/emails, what else do you do during these off-peak hours?

I go to the gym in the mornings (so that I don’t just lie in!) then start work around midday (general admin/life issues), do a lot of leisurely lunching (!) then teach 4-7ish. Then I either rehearse with my band or run my choir! I also teach all day Saturday.

Great question, I know that a few teachers offer “off-peak” lesson prices to try and draw more of there students to come earlier in the day. Aiming to draw as many students away from the “peak time” hours is really valuable as it means that those slots are only being booked up by individuals who really can’t come another time.
I would recommend going through all your students and seeing if any would be tempted to move to a day time, during one of their days off etc.

Practice, Practice and more Practice. Not just my instrument, but other areas of music. Never know what might be useful. And the occasional Netflix binge of course:)

Great question!!!
In the daytime, teaching Shift workers/Retirees or prepping my lessons for later in the day, or training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to keep active!! The last few years Ive found the more active i keep myself the more i can do..physically and mentally.
Previous years to that realisation I certainly did spend time lying around in the day doing nothing productive. It just fed into a greater sense of doing little…the less you do the less you want to do…

So true about physical and mental stimulation! I go to gym classes most mornings, mainly to ensure I actually get out of bed!

When I’m not teaching, I have a couple of part time regular day jobs to keep me busy which will hopefully disappear soon as my teaching builds up.
Apart from that, I generally spend time getting rugby tackled by my two young daughters . . . -
I teach at a school Monday to Wednesday then Thurs and Fri I do admin/ preparing for school lessons and general stuff. I teach half day Saturday just to take a rest!!!

I do peripatetic lessons at a school on Mondays and Wednesdays, and I also teach a bunch of shift workers/retirees so the bulk of my work is actually done during the day. I’ve got in a nice rhythm of carving out a slot each day to work out and go out on the bike. I’m always done by 7pm apart from Wednesdays when I run a choir in the evening. It means I get time with my wife who works a regular 9-5. I guess the key is to find balance in your life. If you’re too idle, commit to some personal development, if the rest of your life is hectic, carve out space to rest and revitalise.

When students enquire make your times clear.People can assume evenings only. Many people work shifts or are retired. If you dont want to teach in the day. Its yours to do what you want with.
