Students Struggling With Their Breathing (Singing Teachers)
Tips please for a guy in his 20’s with a great soulful vocal who is singing Take Me To Church a semitone down, but still struggling with the breathing when repeating the chorus. 2 choruses in a row is always demanding but he can’t seem to anchor his body to keep on top of the breathing. I have asked him to not overdo it as he really belts it till he’s almost in pain, but he slips very easily back into falsetto if he doesn’t give it some.. so it’s tricky! Any ideas?

Is it just a case of needing to work on getting a quick, expansive breath? In which case, I normally get people to call out a rather long sentence several times: “Hey you over there, how are you doing today? I’m fine thank you very much, how’s your *insert as many relations as you can with the rest of the breath*” to show the student that the body knows how to do it already and start to develop a control over it. Then take it into the song by calling out the lyrics instead of the sentence then add the melody back in when that’s comfortable.

Could it be that he’s using a breathy sound? Using a breathier tone uses up more air faster so perhaps getting him to focus on twang/hard palate resonance/forward placement would work wonders?
