  • How do you Encourage Students to Practice & Play Technically Well? (Piano Teachers)

That’s a tough question because I teach a wide age range….Perhaps, I’d approach it from another angle. What do students often, very very often not do? They don’t prepare, imagine the tune in their head, check for correct hand position and count before they start to play a piece; they just get into it and play! I find it a tricky habit to foster – what can you recommend to encourage them to practice with better technique?

I think as a teacher it is down to me to make sure all the preparations are done – there is a place for letting students just play , but I think it is down to the teacher to ask questions like – are your hands in the right place? – how many do you have to count in this piece ? , is there anything you need to remember throughout this piece? etc , before they begin and prompt’ don’t forget to count in’ etc , if you do it every time then it becomes the natural way to start the each time – start from the very first lesson .

I think you need to ask why the student isn’t practising.. is it a forced lesson or a passion?
