Lessons Tailored To You
I’ve been a musician, ever since I picked up an old boxwood clarinet at the tender age of 6 and started playing a tune on it. I played in orchestras and wind bands, and by the time I was 14, I had passed my Grade 8 Associated Board practical exam. When I left school, I discovered the saxophone and fell in love with the sound, so I bought one and began playing in a folk-rock band. From here on, I played in a variety of bands; jazz, funk, comedy, folk and pop – I found I liked the variety.

Learn About Your Instrument
When it comes to understanding your instrument, it's important to know the different parts of a flute and their functions. As your flute teacher, I'll guide you through this essential knowledge, helping you appreciate the craftsmanship and functionality that contribute to the flute's beautiful sound.
The Headjoint
The headjoint is where you create the sound. It consists of the lip plate, where you blow across the opening (the embouchure hole) to produce tones. As flute teachers, we emphasise how subtle changes in your embouchure can affect your sound and intonation. This part is crucial for developing a strong foundation in flute playing, whether you're a beginner or an advanced player.
The Body
Moving to the body of the flute, this is where most of the keys are located. These keys, when pressed, open and close the tone holes, altering the air flow and pitch. In our lessons, we'll explore how mastering these keys can improve your dexterity and hand coordination. Understanding the body of the flute is integral in achieving the precision required for complex pieces whether you're playing a classical symphony or contemporary jazz.
The Footjoint
The footjoint adds the finishing touch to your flute's range, containing keys that enable the production of the lower notes. As we get into more advanced lessons, integrating this component will open up your ability to play more intricate and full-bodied pieces. This is especially important when you're part of an orchestra or ensemble, ensuring you contribute to the harmonic richness of the group.
Integrating Music Theory
As a flute music teacher in Cambridge, I stress the importance of integrating music theory into your learning process. Understanding how each part of the flute works with theory will build a comprehensive skillset. This knowledge becomes particularly valuable when complemented with clarinet lessons, saxophone improvisation, or even beginner violin sessions, as it builds a broad spectrum of musical skills that are sought after by orchestra teachers and music tutors alike.
By demystifying these components, you’ll not just play the flute—you'll play it with confidence and understanding. With guidance from more teachers and tutors, you’ll be prepared to leverage these skills across various musical landscapes. The journey through flute music is as much about technical proficiency as it is about musical expression, both of which are cultivated through understanding your instrument's anatomy.
My goal is to make learning not just an educational experience, but also a creative journey that's truly enjoyable. By fostering a student-centered atmosphere, I ensure that your flute lessons are as unique as your musical voice, allowing your creativity and expression to flourish. Together, we'll explore a diverse repertoire that sustains your interest and nurtures your growth as a musician.
