Beginning any instrument is a big deal! When I first asked to learn drums, they wouldn't let me take it up because I was too small (4 years old) to reach the pedals!
Things have changed a little since 1995. They make smaller drum kits for one thing And you don't need to be a body builder to play the drums well. What you do need, is a good teacher, lots of practice and as much time as you can give to it. The best part with drums, it takes 10 minutes to learn a new beat but a lifetime to master it.
What I can teach you is how to achieve what you want from playing the drums, in the most engaging, musically rich and enjoyable way.
I began teaching when I was at University. We studied, 5 days a week, in classes of just under 20 drummers (all in one room!). After some time studying together, I noticed that out of our group of 20, there were only 3 or 4 of us that didn't get regular injuries from practicing all day, every day. Whether it was wrist strain, hand blisters, shoulder or back pain. We quickly figured out that it was the few of us who had lessons from a young age, with technique-focused teachers that could play faster, longer, louder and without pain, day in and day out.
From then on, I ran sessions just after our classes to work through and check up on technique. And our group came up way ahead of our peers at graduation.
I graduated in 2013 and I've been teaching ever since. Alongside recording, writing, producing, performing and learning with some of my musical heroes.
The most enjoyable part of teaching, for me, is the changes you see in a student's confidence levels. Whether it's helping to focus a student's seemingly untameable energy or bringing out the rockstar in someone more timid. Everyone always feels better after a drum lesson!
[email protected]My lessons cost £18 per half hour and £35 per hour for students of all ages.
I take most of my lessons from my home teaching space, however, zoom lessons are also available.
I teach students of all ages. Both adults and children are welcome to learn with me.
I believe that weekly lessons are the best way to improve as a player and learner.
