Lessons Tailored To You
Music has been a major part of my life since I was 12 years old when I had my first drumming lesson. Throughout the years I have experienced, educated myself and pushed myself to become a better drummer and musician. My journey with drums started at a small school called Foundation Groove, founded by my drum tutor James De Lovell. There I learnt the basics of drumming which sparked my love for it. I was involved in lots of shows and drum clinics for all ages to learn, play and grow with other drummers and musicians.

Learn All Genres Via High Quality Music Lessons
Exploring Different Genres in Drum Lessons
As your drum teacher here at Drum Lessons Oxford, I am passionate about introducing students in Oxford to a variety of musical genres. Each style brings its own unique techniques and rhythms, which I think are essential for any aspiring drummer to explore.
Rock and Pop
In our first lessons, we often dive into the energetic world of rock and pop. These genres are perfect for beginners, as they help students develop fundamental drumming techniques while playing along with popular songs from artists they love. The straightforward beats serve as an excellent introduction to drumming that prepares students for more complex styles down the road.
Jazz
For those looking to advance their skills, jazz drumming offers a rich landscape for creativity and improvisation. During lessons, I focus on swing rhythms and syncopation, which help students build a solid foundation. Jazz is great for intermediate drummers who want to expand their musical vocabulary and expressiveness.
Funk and R&B
Funk and R&B are fantastic for students interested in groove-based music. These styles require precise timing and a deep understanding of rhythm, which we work on together in our sessions. The intricate beats found in funk can challenge even seasoned drummers, making it a rewarding genre to learn.
Latin and World Music
I also believe in the importance of exploring global rhythms. Incorporating Latin and world music into drum lessons not only broadens students' musical horizons but also allows them to understand different cultural contexts and techniques. From samba to afrobeats, these genres can be incredibly fun to play and learn.
Learn To Make The Most Out Of Practice
One of the most effective ways to practice drums is to establish a consistent routine. By setting aside dedicated time each day, you can make steady progress in your skills. I recommend starting with shorter practice sessions of about 15 to 30 minutes, especially for children and beginners.
As you build your stamina and focus, gradually increase the length of these sessions. Consistency is key, so it's important to integrate practice into your daily life, whether that's before school or after homework. I have been teaching drums for years and can help you with a practice plan if you need it.
Indeed, with so many drum resources available online, more teachers than ever are able to help drummers of all abilities to progress rapidly between lessons.
Focus on Fundamental Techniques
During my lessons in Oxford, I emphasise the importance of mastering foundational techniques. This means spending time on basic rhythms, sticking techniques, and grip.
As a teacher, I often tailor these drills to fit the unique needs of my students. For example, if a student is interested in learning to play the guitar soon, I might incorporate rhythms that complement guitar patterns
Practising these fundamentals not only builds muscle memory but also prepares you for more advanced drumming techniques later on.
Break Down Songs and Patterns
When working on a new piece or rhythm, I suggest breaking it down into smaller, manageable sections. In your first lesson, I’ll often teach students how to dissect the song into phrases, focusing on one section at a time.
This approach allows you to fully understand and master each part before putting it all together. Additionally, it keeps practising engaging and less overwhelming, which is especially helpful for children whose attention spans can vary.
Utilise Online Resources and Tools
With the rise of online lessons, there are countless resources available to assist in your practice. I encourage my students to explore online tutorials, play-along tracks, and metronome apps that can enhance their learning experience.
These tools can help reinforce the techniques we work on during lessons and provide a new way to engage with the music. Whether it’s jamming along to your favorite songs or learning new rhythms with the help of drum teachers online, the possibilities are endless.
My goal is to create a supportive environment in which students—whether children or adults—can feel confident as they learn and play the drums. Each week, we'll build upon your skills and introduce new styles, ensuring a comprehensive music education. I’m here to teach you the fundamentals and techniques, all while keeping the process engaging and enjoyable. Let’s get started on this musical journey together in Oxford!
