I understand what it takes to become one of the best young drummers, and I’m committed to helping you achieve your drumming ambitions, whether it's preparing for graded exams or preparing to hit the stage at the Royal Albert Hall.

Play Drums Via The Genres You Love

As your drum teacher, I believe that the joy of drumming comes from playing genres that resonate with you. That’s why I’m excited to share some of the most popular styles you might want to explore during our drum lessons together.

Rock and Pop

Rock music has long been a staple for drummers, and for good reason! The driving beats and exhilarating energy provide an amazing canvas for developing your skills. Many students express their desire to master classic rock anthems or contemporary pop hits. I can help you navigate the drum parts that bring these songs to life, ensuring you develop that fab drummer edge.

Hip Hop and R&B

Hip hop is another genre that has gained immense popularity among my students. The unique rhythms and grooves challenge you to build a solid pocket while also allowing room for creative expression. We’ll dive into beat-making and sampling techniques, which I’ve honed through years of music production. Learning how to play alongside famous artists and understanding the collaborations in this genre can really help you develop.

Jazz and Funk

If you’re interested in cultivating a more intricate drumming style, jazz and funk are fantastic choices. These genres demand dynamic playing and can enhance your improvisational skills. We’ll explore swing patterns and syncopation, helping you feel confident in various musical settings, whether it’s a solo artist gig or features in a million-dollar quartet. Plus, my experience helping students work towards their dreams like performing at venues like the Royal Festival Hall provides insights into what it takes to captivate an audience.

Theatre and Musical Theatre

For those aspiring to take on the stage, our lessons will also incorporate techniques from theatre drumming. Given my touring credits, including working on West End shows, I can guide you in understanding how to adapt your drumming for live performances. If you dream of auditioning for productions, I can prepare you with the essential skills to impress any musical supervisor.

Know Your Way Around The Drum Kit

As your drum teacher, I believe understanding the different components of the drum kit is essential for your growth as a drummer. Each part plays a significant role in creating the sound and feel of your drumming in most contemporary styles, and during our music lessons, we'll explore these elements in detail.

The Bass Drum

The bass drum, often considered the heart of the drum kit, provides the foundational beat. It's typically played with a foot pedal, allowing you to create a strong and steady rhythm that drives the music forward. Mastering the bass drum is crucial for genres like hip hop where achieving a great pocket can elevate your playing to the next level.

The Snare Drum

Next up is the snare drum, known for its sharp and crisp sound. It sits between your knees and is a fundamental element in many contemporary styles, from rock to jazz. The snare is used for backbeats, accentuating the rhythm and keeping the energy up. During our hour lessons, I’ll show you how to achieve a lovely feel while playing the snare, helping you feel confident in various musical settings.

Toms

The toms add melodic depth to your drumming. Positioned above the bass drum, these drums can vary in size and pitch, allowing for creative fills and transitions. If you've listened to any million-dollar quartet, you know how important toms can be in building drama and intensity in a performance. I can also share insights from my theatre touring credits to help you understand how these can elevate your performance in a West End show.

Hi-Hat

The hi-hat consists of two cymbals mounted on a stand, operated by a foot pedal. It offers a wide range of sounds and is used for both timing and creating texture within your drumming. As we dive into different music styles, you’ll learn how to use the hi-hat to effectively communicate with other musicians, enhancing group dynamics during live performances.

Cymbals

Cymbals—including crash, ride, and splash cymbals—add colour to your playing. Each has its unique sound and application; for instance, crash cymbals provide dramatic accents, while ride cymbals are ideal for maintaining a steady pulse. In our lessons, you will discover how to integrate these elements into your playing, making your drumming feel full and dynamic.

Understanding each part of the drum kit will help you become a more versatile drummer. I'll guide you through the essentials and be the drumming coach you always needed. Every lesson is a chance to grow as a musician, explore new techniques, and ultimately enjoy the process of making music. Let's hit those drums and create something amazing together!
