Tailored Lessons at Your Own Pace
Every student is unique, and I believe in adapting my approach to suit your personal goals and abilities. My individual lessons are designed for you to progress at your own pace, whether you’re mastering classical techniques, exploring music theory, or simply learning to play for fun. Many of my students in Southampton, from children to adults, have built their skills with a mix of structured guidance and creative freedom.
Building a Strong Foundation
For beginners, I focus on helping you develop good posture, bowing techniques, and ear training. We’ll cover the essentials of reading sheet music and understanding music theory, setting you up for success. If you're an advanced player or an orchestral cellist, we can work on refining expression and technique, or even preparing for auditions or performances.
A Variety of Options
I offer private cello lessons, but I’m also happy to direct you to group lessons if you’re interested in collaboration with other musicians. While my main focus is the cello, I have knowledge surrounding a range of instruments like violin, double bass, electric guitar, flute, and drums. This broad experience helps me tailor lessons for individuals who perform in ensembles, orchestras, or even more modern group settings.
Teaching with Experience and Passion
With many years of teaching experience under my belt and a background in performing across orchestras, ensembles, and solo settings, I bring both knowledge and passion to my lessons. I’ve taught students of all ages in Southampton, New Forest, and surrounding areas, some of whom have gone on to study music at university, while others have found joy in playing with local ensembles or schools.
Your First Steps
Your first lesson is all about getting to know you—your interests, your abilities, and your musical goals. I’ll walk you through the basics of the instrument and help you feel confident as you begin your cello journey. For those with prior experience, we’ll start by listening to what you’ve played before and tailoring a plan that helps you achieve your next milestones.
Together, we'll explore a world of music, from classical pieces to more contemporary compositions. Whether you're aspiring to join a school orchestra, play for sheer enjoyment, or achieve advanced levels, my goal is to be the perfect tutor to help you along the way. With patience, encouragement, and tailored guidance, we’ll make this an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.

Music Theory & the Cello
When learning the cello, understanding music theory is absolutely essential. It’s like having a map that guides you through the intricate world of music, enabling you to truly connect with your instrument. Music theory helps you make sense of what you hear, play, and create—it’s the foundation of everything from reading sheet music to interpreting a composition with emotion and precision. Whether you're transitioning from another instrument like the violin, piano, or even the double bass, music theory ensures a smoother learning process by giving you the tools to understand and adapt.
Experienced Teacher
As an experienced cello teacher, I’ve worked with students of all ages and abilities, from young children to adults pursuing cello as part of their liberal arts education. No matter your background, grasping music theory will enhance your experience. It empowers you not just to play notes but to explore dynamics, harmony, rhythm, and even composition. My private cello lessons include theory in a way that’s fun, approachable, and directly tied to the pieces you’re learning.
Why Use Music Theory?
Music theory also connects you to larger musical communities. If you aspire to join ensembles, orchestras, or pursue solo performances, understanding how your cello interacts with other instruments like the viola, bass clarinet, or guitar is invaluable. Beyond that, it builds your confidence. You’ll find yourself less reliant on cello teachers or tutors when tackling new pieces or playing with ensembles.
The good news is, learning music theory alongside the cello fits seamlessly into your musical growth. Whether you’re just starting or refining your skills with an experienced music teacher, this knowledge enriches your playing. You’ll discover how to interpret and perform with depth, bringing the joy of music—and the cello—to life. Let's make learning music together engaging and fulfilling!
Learn All Styles
When I first started learning the cello, I was amazed by the variety of styles this instrument could unlock. From classical masterpieces to modern pop arrangements, the possibilities felt endless. Thanks to my cello teachers and experiences performing with ensembles, I discovered how versatile the cello truly is. Whether you’re passionate about traditional works or experimental sounds, there’s so much to explore at Cello Lessons Southampton.
Classical Elegance
Classical music holds that timeless charm that every cellist experiences at some point. Performing pieces by Bach, Beethoven, or Dvořák offers an unmatched depth and beauty. I truly believe that learning these pieces alongside professional cello teachers in settings like liberal arts music programs or university ensembles helps you connect with the tradition of the instrument on a profound level. Plus, classical training builds the technical foundation to branch out into other genres.
Jazz and Modern Sounds
For those who love exploring unexpected harmonies and rhythms, the cello fits beautifully into jazz and modern music. I still remember the vibrant energy of my first time improvising in a jazz ensemble. Incorporating techniques inspired by singing, guitar, or even solo piano, the cello in these styles adds a rich, soulful quality that resonates with audiences of all ages. Whether you’re a child just starting out or an experienced musician, experimenting with contemporary pieces is always exciting.
Folk and World Music
The cello also finds its voice in folk and world music traditions. UK folk tunes, for instance, take on a warm, emotional tone when performed on the cello. Many cello tutors encourage students to explore these styles to develop an expressive approach to playing. It’s a fun and meaningful way to broaden your horizons and learn about the music of different cultures while honing your skills.
Pop and Film Music
Sometimes, learning to play the cello with popular songs or film soundtracks can be incredibly motivating. I love working with children and adults alike to bring their favourite tunes to life. Whether you’re inspired by a sweeping movie score or the latest chart-topper, performing these pieces with the cello is both rewarding and a little magical.
No matter your personal preferences, the cello offers a wealth of styles to suit every musician. With the right guidance from experienced solo teachers and a willingness to explore, you too can uncover the joys of such a versatile instrument.

Learning to play the cello is a truly enriching experience, and I’m here to guide you every step of the way. Whether you’re an absolute beginner or an advanced player looking to refine your technique, I offer tailored cello lessons designed to suit your individual needs and aspirations. My goal is to help you unlock the beauty and depth of this incredible instrument while making the lessons engaging and enjoyable. Together, we’ll work on everything from basic fundamentals to more complex skills, always at your pace and with your goals in mind.
