Welcome to
Hello, my name is Johnathan Coleman and I am a professional Violin and Cello teacher based in Nottingham. I have over 15 years experience of teaching Violin and Cello.
I have a great range of experience which I like to draw upon to make sure you get the most out of your lessons while learning with me. This includes years of performing experience ontop of years of teaching experience.
I have taught Cello and Violin in Music Centres, Education Centres and Schools in the UK. I have met different kinds of young children and I have good communication skill with them. For adult students, I understand that they have physical difference with young children but I will try my best to help them to fix the problem of playing instrument.

I have prepared different types of teaching materials to solve difficulties in playing Cello or Violin, such as various bowing , intonation , some tricky rhythm , running passage , left hand frame , shifting , vibrato , tonal control , right hand techniques (martele bowing , spiccato , accent). And I have full instruction for students to make a good posture.
Considering junior students cannot practice well at home, I have used Musescore to make some music videos of elementary teaching materials, so that junior students can follow the videos in my Youtube channel to practice, to make sure that their intonation and rhythm are correct. Additionally, I would like to do some ear training with students , such as distinguishing intervals and chords , clap the time and rhythm. These help students to build up good intonation and sense of rhythm.
Lessons are pay-as-you-go, weekly, fortnightly or as suits you.
I welcome both beginner and advanced students to take my lessons. I will always make a lesson plan that suits your learning style.
Over the many years I have taught Violin and Cello, I mainly taught children who aged from 6 to 12 and adults as well, I would like to share my experience of teaching children and adults with my new students.
Firstly, it is important to take care their feeling. Children have different characteristic, some children may not be potential enough to learn, teachers have to arrange different teaching materials for them. Also, encouragement is necessary for children too.
Secondly, setting up some easy targets may let children and adults to learn more energetically. Learning instrument is quite difficult for children because it requires learner to have good control of fingers , good memory for reading scores , good aural skills etc, so many children may not play their instrument well at the beginning. In my lessons, I may make some simple exercises, shorten the songs and do some simple aural training so that students can learn instrument easily at the start.
For teaching intermediate or advanced strings students, I may refer to ABRSM Practical Exam to arrange teaching material. There are three main points for me to teach students to perform their music well:
1. Right-hand techniques. Firstly, tonal quality depends on your bow pressure, bow speed and contact point, students have to control those things well to make thin or thick sound. Secondly , different types of right-hand techniques such as martele bowing, spiccato , accent etc will be taught in my lesson.
2. Vibrato. There are two types of vibrato: Wrist Vibrato and Arm Vibrato, students have to choose either one to practice. Wrist Vibrato may not be suitable for all students because there are many students cannot control their wrist well. I may suggest students which vibrato is suitable for them. On the another hand , controlling depth and frequency of vibtato may affect the performance very much. I may discuss with students how to control vibrato in different styles of music.
3. Understanding different periods of music. As many students know, they have to play 3-4 pieces in ABRSM Exam, the pieces may be in Baroque Period, Classical Period or Romantic Period. I may discuss how play different types of music in the lesson.
Here are a couple of shops in the local area that cater to those learning the Violin:
Turner Violins, located at 1-5 Lily Grove, Beeston, Nottingham NG9 1QL, offer both new instruments and repairs for all. The staff will help you chose out the right violin for you as well as offering some great advice. This is by far the best place to go for repairs.
Windblowers, is a shop that mainly focusses on wind instruments but they also offer some services and repairs for stringed instruments as well. You can find them at 75-77 Derby Rd, Nottingham NG1 5BA.
In daily life, we cannot live without music, music is always around us. Music is beautiful things for people and it is happy for me to share music all the time. I can sing a song with playing guitar on the street , I can play Violin with friend who plays piano to share music in town hall. Also, teaching music is the way for me to share music too. I can play the theme song of "demon slayer" with my students and they will be happy too. It is amazing that playing the music with anyone who also love music.
