About Me

Whatever your piano playing goal, I can show you how to reach it!

I specialise in accompanying classical singers and I am currently a Young Artist at the National Opera Studio in London. I started learning the piano aged 7 after being inspired by the ‘magic box’ in the corner that my mum played. I went on to study at Oxford and Yale universities and the Royal Northern College of Music and have performed in many exciting venues across the UK including the Brighton Dome, Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall Manchester and Symphony Hall Birmingham.

I hold associate and licentiate diplomas in piano performance and have taught privately for 14 years as well as in Schools across South London. When my students have wanted to take exams they have achieved merit and distinction marks with ABRSM.

I teach my students to understand three key areas of great piano playing: technique, understanding the score and expression.

For technique, I will take you through a progressive series of ‘workouts’ for your fingers, hand and arm  that can quickly train you to feel strong, supple and coordinated at the piano. My approach comes from my wonderful teachers and can be traced back to great pianists including Franz Liszt, Theodor Leschetizsky and Alfred Corot. We will always do this with expression in mind so that every note you play can be beautiful and never mechanical. The search for beautiful sound will automatically relax your body and help your muscles to work optimally. With a strong technique you can create the music you want, and it feels good too!

For understanding the score we will go so much deeper than just reading the notes. In order to really own a piece, I will show you how to understand harmony, musical patterns and shapes so that you can perform with confidence. This is accessible for the youngest beginners as well as the most advanced pianists. Nervous, stuttering playing is caused by a surface understanding of music, so I will teach you how to know it inside-out and upside down!

Expression is what it’s all about. With your toolkit of technique and score knowledge, I will guide you to figure out what a piece means and how the composer translates emotions so that human beings can communicate on the deepest level. Whether your ambition is to gain qualifications, whip out a thrilling party piece or move people to tears with the sincerest music, you playing will come alive when it’s all about expression.

In a typical lesson you can expect to start by reviewing your ‘workouts’ to check that the body is working well and seeing if any new ones are needed. We will then look at the pieces and styles of music that you most want to play. I view the purpose of a lesson as teaching you how to practice so that you can really soar in your own time. The only way to progress at the piano is practice carefully and often, so I want you to leave the lesson knowing exactly how to progress. But don’t feel intimated – I understand that sometimes life gets in the way and I am never pushy with my students. My motto is simply “where are you at and how can I help?”

Whatever your age and ability, please feel free to get in touch if you want to take your technique, score reading and expression to a much higher level.

I highly recommend him as a piano tutor. He has been teaching my son for four years and has done an excellent job. I am very happy with his teaching and couldn’t be happier with the progress my son has made.
