About

About

After graduating from The BRIT School, obtaining the highest possible grade in their music programme, I went on to study a music degree at the University of Surrey where I achieved first class honours. My degree saw me majoring in jazz composition and advanced harmony. I have been playing the piano for the past 15 years of my life, and have been teaching the piano for the past 7.

Throughout my career I have taught students ranging in age from 3 to above 60 years old, all ranging in standard from pre-grade 1 to diploma level in classical, jazz and popular performance. I have a true passion for teaching and passing on my skills to all who desire it. Whether you want to learn a Chopin Nocturne or a Bill Evans solo, I want to help guide you on your musical journey. As a working musician, I also earn as a session musician and composer, working with a number of highly acclaimed artists over the years.

As emphasised by my undergraduate dissertation title, “The Evolution of Jazz Harmony”, I am particularly interested in music theory as a whole. Therefore, I also offer to teach this (popular or classical), as from personal experience I found understanding the backbone of music to be both interesting and unequivocally valuable.

Music Qualifications & Achievements:

Nick has been teaching me piano for well over a year, now. He is a natural and gifted teacher, who carries his skills and knowledge lightly. Each lesson is usually a mixture of theory and practice, which he is able to convey easily and accessibly. He is able to assess ability and progress shrewdly, and pitches the lessons accordingly, at just the right level, with the right level of encouragement and advice. The learning pieces are selected carefully, for the specific individual, with a good balance of difficulty, challenge and ease. Most importantly – the lessons are enjoyable.

Nick does wonders with my 10 yo kid. My kid loves playing the piano but he gets bored easily. Nick keeps it interesting for him and makes it fun but also structured so my kid sees progress. My kid took weekly lessons for about a year before but did not progress much, after 8 months of weekly sessions with Nick my kid took the initial grade exam and passed with merit. Nick is a great teacher with a passion for music and patience for kids. We are very happy to have found him.

Nick started teaching both by son and daughter piano over 6 months ago. He achieves a great balance between a serious and disciplined approach whilst maintaining a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. As a result both of my children are happy to have the lessons (not achieved before) and both have progressed. We look forward to continuing!

Nick is a great piano teacher. I am an adult learner and he has been teaching me for over 2 years. I am not interested in taking grades so he developed a learning syllabus specific to me. I am fascinated by all genres and he has introduced me to playing everything from classical to jazz to pop. He is engaging and always guides me in the right direction. Over the last few years I have improved more than I could have ever imagined! I would highly recommend Nick as a teacher.

Nick is a great piano teacher. He has been teaching me since Sept 2020. Patient, polite, always encouraging, and with great advice on techniques and practice tips for both classical and jazz / pop pieces. Good sense of humour and able to adapt his teaching style depending on my capability at any given time.

He has also occasionally taught my daughter (aged 10 – grade 2 level) during holidays and she has loved his lessons too .

Nick has been teaching our 5-year-old online since the summer and she loves her piano lessons! He is calm, patient and engages her well at a suitable level, always praising and encouraging, which is hard enough in person, let alone online! I particularly like the way Nick asks what songs she likes so that she a) knows them and b) likes them! This approach is working brilliantly and we can see great progress, even in just a few months.
