Music TeacherAbout
About | Hello! I’m Erik Larson, and my journey into music began at a young age, where it quickly became both a passion and a means of connecting with others. Music provided a world of expression, one that I’ve been fortunate enough to explore deeply through both performance and education. I pursued my undergraduate studies at The Juilliard School, where I had the privilege of working with exceptional trumpet teachers like Raymond Mase, Louis Hanzlik, and John Thiessen. At Juilliard, I gained not only technical skills but also valuable teaching experience through the Music Advancement Program. This program gave me the opportunity to lead trumpet masterclasses and work with students on ear training and music history, solidifying my passion for teaching. Upon graduating, I continued my education at Rice University under the mentorship of Barbara Butler, a renowned pedagogue in the trumpet community. At Rice, I deepened my knowledge and honed my craft, preparing me for the diverse teaching and performance opportunities that lay ahead. Since moving to Houston, I’ve had the chance to teach students across a wide range of ages and skill levels, from young beginners to more advanced players. My teaching has spanned both private lessons and work within public schools, allowing me to adapt my methods to meet each student’s unique needs. I have also been honored to serve as a substitute for several prestigious ensembles, including the Houston Grand Opera, Nashville Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, and Dayton Philharmonic. I was also named runner-up for The President’s Own Marine Band. With this varied background, I have developed a teaching philosophy centered on fostering a supportive, creative environment where students feel encouraged to grow and explore their musical voice. I focus on guiding each student through personalized instruction, helping them not only master technical skills but also connect deeply with the music they’re playing. Through my performance and teaching career, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of adaptability, both in the way I approach music myself and in how I work with my students. I strive to create individualized learning plans that reflect each student’s aspirations, ensuring that they are not only progressing but also enjoying the process. As I continue to expand my teaching career, I look forward to the new opportunities that lie ahead. Whether working with beginner students or guiding more advanced musicians toward their professional goals, I am committed to nurturing a lifelong love of music in everyone I teach. Ultimately, I believe that music is not just about technical mastery but also about forging connections – with oneself, with others, and with the world around us. |
