About

About

I am a professional piano teacher, composer, and performer who has been teaching private piano lessons for over 15 years and performing music professionally for over 20 years. Having performed many styles of music publicly (from classical to hip-hop and everything in between), I have a wealth of musical experience and knowledge to draw on in order to enhance your lessons based on your unique wants and needs.

I teach in person from a large, comfortable studio space situated close to Nottingham city centre and also provide tuition online. My main focus is on teaching how to read music effectively as I believe this will then enable you to play any music that you desire. I welcome students from the ages of 18 years upwards.

I have a keen interest and study extensively the topics of correct piano technique and posture, as having knowledge in these areas is essential for preventing injury.

I am a keen practitioner of both mindfulness and meditation and incorporate elements of these practices in my lessons wherever appropriate.

Whether your desire is to follow any of the graded examination boards or to instead create a unique learning plan without having to sit exams, you will be well catered for and together we will discover the right musical journey for you.

I started piano lessons with David 16 months ago and it was very obvious from day one that he has a real passion and dedication for teaching and playing piano. David is very inspiring with each lesson which is always full and varied covering scales, playing pieces, theory (if required) and so much more. David has a wealth of knowledge and experience with music and is really helping me understand how to read music and play correctly. David effortlessly helps me with my weaknesses showing me techniques to overcome these hurdles. He is always positive and gently encouraging without adding any pressure. An amazing teacher!

David has been my piano teacher for the best part of 3 years. During that time he has guided me from my very first ‘plonk’ on the keys to a much wider appreciation of musicality. As I have progressed with my lessons, I am able to hear music differently and often have a question as to why / how certain pieces are able to convey different emotions. David is always able to answer my questions, and it is evident that he has a deep connection with the piano and its versatility.

Sometimes I don’t always ‘get’ it, but David never makes me feel that I have failed. He just approaches the glitch from a different angle and then gets me over that obstacle.

David has tutored me both in person at his studio and also online. The online tutorial works surprisingly well, the only drawback being that I thought I could get away with using the wrong fingers occasionally, this was not the case!

I started my piano lessons with David as a complete musical beginner at the age of 23. I was worried that I would struggle to pick it up, but David was very patient and encouraging and now, a year on, I’m working towards my Grade 2. David is very conscious of my experience as a learner. Whenever I’m struggling during a lesson, he will listen to my concerns and he won’t rest until he finds a solution that works for me. David Keye is a brilliant teacher and I would recommend him 100%!
