I have started my BMus (Hons) Performance (piano) degree at the Royal College of Music in September. I have had some experience in teaching piano and cello previously, mainly non-official teaching for my family and friends. I would like to expand this as a career and work with other students as well. I have been a principal cellist for two years in secondary school, as well as a soprano section leader for one year, which has helped me in enhanced my skills in coaching. I have experience in not necessarily teaching young children, but working with them.

Exploring Different Musical Genres

As a dedicated piano teacher in Hammersmith, I firmly believe that a rich musical education encompasses a variety of genres. This diversity not only keeps lessons engaging but also allows my piano students to explore different styles that resonate with them personally.

Classical Music

Classical music serves as the foundation for many musicians, and I encourage all my students, whether they’re beginners or more advanced players, to delve into this genre. Studying pieces from composers like Beethoven and Chopin nurtures a deep appreciation for technical skills and musicality, which are essential for any piano player.

Jazz

For those interested in improvisation and expressive playing, jazz is an exciting genre to explore. I love teaching the fundamentals of jazz—in both rhythm and harmony—allowing students to develop their unique sound. This style of music is perfect for both adult learners looking to rekindle their piano love and children eager to experiment with different rhythms.

Pop and Contemporary Music

Many of my piano students have a passion for pop and contemporary tracks, which are great for learning to play pieces that are familiar and widely enjoyed. I make sure to tailor lessons to include current hits and timeless classics, helping to foster a connection with the music they love.

Rock and Blues

Rock and blues offer a fantastic platform for expressing emotion through the piano. I encourage my students to explore various techniques, such as playing chords with a strong left hand while improvising melodies on the right. This genre appeals to all ages and allows for creativity to shine, particularly in group lessons with friends or family.

Music Theory

Understanding music theory is a crucial part of any musical journey, regardless of the genre chosen. I integrate theory into all piano lessons in Hammersmith to help students grasp why music works the way it does. This understanding enriches their tuition, paving the way for effective practice and performance.

Whether you are pursuing piano playing for fun or aiming to take graded courses, my goal is to guide you through your musical education, ensuring that each lesson is tailored to your interests and aspirations. Together, we can explore the wonderful array of styles that the piano has to offer, all while building foundational skills that will serve you throughout your life as a musician.

Using Music Theory to Learn Piano

At Hammersmith Piano Lessons, I have come to appreciate the vital role that music theory plays in improving my students' piano skills. Understanding the basics of music theory not only deepens one’s musical education but also enhances the overall enjoyment of playing the instrument.

The Foundation of Understanding

In my piano lessons here at Piano Lessons Hammersmith, I strive to integrate music theory alongside practical playing. This connection helps students grasp why certain musical choices are made, whether they are composing their own pieces or interpreting classical works. By teaching concepts like scales, chords, and harmony, I empower my students to approach their music lessons with confidence. This knowledge builds a strong foundation, essential for any aspiring musician.

Applying Theory to Performance

When it comes to performing, students who have a firm grasp of music theory often excel. Understanding the structure of a piece allows them to communicate the emotional nuances within the music more effectively. During our lessons, I help students learn how to apply their theoretical knowledge to improve their interpretation and expression, making their performances more engaging and authentic.

Tailoring Learning to Different Ages

No matter the age, whether working with children or adults, my approach remains flexible and approachable. For younger learners, I present theory in a fun and engaging way that ties directly to the songs they love. For adult students, we delve into more complex concepts that can enhance their piano playing and ignite a renewed passion for piano, rekindling their love for music.

Enriching the Learning Experience

Ultimately, combining music theory with practical teaching not only enriches piano tuition but also makes learning more enjoyable. My goal as a piano teacher in Hammersmith is to ensure each student leaves with a blend of technical prowess and deep musical understanding, ready to tackle any piece they wish to play. By weaving theory into our lessons, we set a course for success that resonates through every note played, creating a fulfilling path for every musician's journey. I have helped students learn towards grades, learn for fun, study at the Royal College and even go on to teach piano themselves.
