My Mission

High Quality Lessons

As a child, I attended music school where I studied classical piano, solfeggio and music theory, and choir singing. Later, I continued my musical journey with private piano lessons and lessons in some other instruments (guitar, violin). As I want to take my knowledge and teaching to a higher level, I am currently preparing for ABRSM diploma.

I have been teaching piano for four years now, beginners and intermediate students. I prepared some of them for ABRSM and Trinity College London exams, with very good results – merit or distinction.

I am passionate about all kinds of music and instruments and I enjoy teaching different genres.

My Lessons

All Ages & Genres

I teach students of all ages, through individually tailored lessons. Both beginners and more experienced students are welcome. We will talk about previous experience in music and student's expectations in the first lesson to see where to start from and what to focus on most.

I also prepare students for piano exams. So far, I have had experience with preparation for ABRSM and Trinity College London piano exams (along with the supporting tests such as aural tests, musical knowledge, etc.). Of course, students who want to learn the piano without taking exams are very welcome too.

Prices:

£15 per 1/2 hour
£20 per 3/4 hour
£25 per 1 hour

Lessons are pay-as-you-go, weekly, fortnightly or as suits you.

Beginners Welcome

I welcome beginner students to individually tailored piano lessons.

My Experience as a Teacher

I have been teaching the piano for four years, firstly based in Aberdeen before relocating to Edinburgh. I have welcomed students of 5 years old and upwards, including many adult learners, to attend individually tailored piano lessons focused around the interests of my students.

Although my own training is in classical music, my lessons take a student lead approach. This means that I draw upon many different genres when teaching, including folk, popular, jazz and more.

As a music student myself, I attended music school for four years, studying a wide range of different musical styles. Since that time I have been able to learn several different instruments, developing a holistic approach both to learning and teaching music.

I am currently studying for an ABRSM Diploma and look forward to welcoming new students to start lessons with me.

Fun fact about which musician I would most like to meet: I listen to various genres of music, from classical to metal, so there are many musicians I would be very happy to meet. But if I had to pick only a few, I would say Tuomas Holopainen whose music introduced me to metal, Bruce Springsteen whose live performance was a very special experience and Hans Zimmer who wrote music for Pirates of the Caribbean, one of my favourite films.

More About My Lessons

So far, I have mostly been teaching the beginners and intermediate students.

Beginner students, regardless of their age, can expect to gain all the basic knowledge they need to be able to learn and play easy music on their own. We will start by getting to know the instrument and how it works (ideally by opening one and taking a look inside!) and how to sit comfortably at the piano. Then, we will play some exercises to place the fingers in the proper position and play a few chords and songs by ear to find out how it feels to actually play something that sounds nice. After that, we will start reading music and working on aural skills (and possibly little music theory, depending on student's interest).

Intermediate students can tell me and show me what they already know in our first lesson. We will talk about their experience with piano so far and if there is anything specific they would like to learn. Once that is done, we will start taking their skills further and possibly, if they haven't played in a while, fill in any gaps in their knowledge of the basics.

Music Shops in Edinburgh

Edinburgh has a couple of shops that are dedicated to piano players. Here are the stores I would recommend if you're looking for a specialist.

Red Dog Music, located 1 Grassmarket, Edinburgh, EH1 2HY is a modern store which specialises in keyboards, Pianos as well as a whole range of other musical instruments and accessories. If you're looking to pick up your first piano or keyboard, here could be worth a try!

Frequently Asked Questions

My lessons are charged at £15 per half hour, £20 per 45 minutes and £25 per hour lesson.

I currently teach all of my lessons online via Skype. I will be returning to in-person lessons in due course and can add you to a waiting list if you are interested in only in-person lessons in Edinburgh.

I teach both children (4+) and adults in a wide range of styles and genres. I have a lot of experience teaching younger students and have created specialised lessons for young learners. I am always more than happy to talk with parents should they have any questions about their child starting lessons with me.

I would recommend taking consistent lessons to enable a student to build their knowledge over time. It is entirely up to you as a student how regularly you would like to take lessons, with my advice to new students that weekly or fortnightly lessons work best.

Please note Piano Lessons Edinburgh operates 24-hour cancellation policy. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours notice will be charged half the price of the lesson.
