I am a Welsh harpist and pianist who has recently moved to Croydon and I enjoy teaching both harp and piano children and adult pupils. I first studied harp, piano, and musicianship at the William Mathias Music Centre in Caernarfon with Elinor Bennett, Iwan Llywelyn Jones and Sioned Webb. Born in Mynytho at the heart of the LlÅ·n Peninsula, I have enjoyed many successes in Welsh Eisteddfodau and festivals including first prize in harp competitions at the National Eisteddfod and the National Cerdd Dant Festival.

Student Advice

Key Concepts of Music Theory

In private piano lessons, we delve into essential elements of music theory, such as scales, chords, and rhythms. For instance, learning scales helps to develop finger dexterity while providing a framework for improvisation and composition. When students grasp chord progressions, they can easily transition between different musical sections, making their performances fluid and engaging.

I like to use important aspects of music theory to help you reach your musical goals & I offer lessons to both beginners and advanced students. I often teach students about time signatures and note values, which can dramatically improve their timing and rhythm, essential for playing alongside other musicians or in a band.

Understanding music theory is essential for playing the piano effectively, as it serves as the foundation for learning various styles and genres. Whether you are a beginner exploring the world of music or an advanced student looking to refine your skills, grasping music theory can significantly enhance your playing and overall musical education.

Benefits for All Ages

I've witnessed numerous occasions where former students have expressed how understanding theory has elevated their playing abilities, adding depth to their music and boosting their confidence. Whether you’re a parent of a child picking up the keyboard for the first time or an adult returning to music after years, I strive to make my lessons fun and engaging and this includes music theory as theory doesn’t have to be daunting—it can be a tool that opens the door to creativity and expression.

Techniques That Piano Teachers Recommend

As your dedicated piano teacher, I believe that mastering various techniques is essential for enhancing your piano skills and overall musicianship. Understanding these techniques can make piano lessons fun and engaging.

Finger Technique

One of the fundamental techniques we will cover in our piano lessons is finger technique. Proper finger placement and movement are crucial for achieving fluidity and speed in playing. I often encourage students to practice finger exercises daily to build strength and dexterity. This foundational skill will enable you to tackle more challenging pieces across different genres, such as classical or jazz.

Dynamics and Expression

Learning how to play with dynamics—managing the volume and intensity of your sound—is essential for bringing music to life. Through my lessons in South Croydon, I teach students how to use dynamics to convey emotions in their playing. We'll explore ways to emphasise certain notes or phrases, which adds depth to your performances, making it feel engaging for both you and your audience.

Improvisation

Improvisation is a valuable skill for any pianist, and I love teaching this aspect in my piano lessons. Whether you're interested in jazz or rock, improvisation encourages creativity and allows you to express yourself through music, improv is an important technique to grasp whether you're learning piano, or playing bass guitar or learning to sing. In our sessions, we might start by breaking down simple chord progressions, and then I'll guide you to experiment with melodies, helping you to find your unique musical voice.

Chord Progressions

Understanding chord progressions is vital for advanced students and beginners alike. Knowing common progressions opens up a world of possibilities when playing or composing music. I focus on teaching my students how to identify and use these progressions effectively, offering a solid foundation for performing pieces or even arranging your music.

Sight Reading

Sight reading is an important technique we will work on, which helps improve your ability to read and play music on the spot. As a student in my lessons, you'll learn various strategies to enhance your reading skills, from identifying key signatures to recognising note patterns. This technique is particularly helpful for those involved in group settings, as it allows you to play alongside other musicians seamlessly.

Conclusion

By integrating these techniques into our piano lessons, I ensure that you not only develop your technical skills but also enjoy the learning process. Whether your goal is to perform live, accompany singing, or explore different styles like classical and jazz, I am here to empower you as your trusted piano tutor. If you're looking to find piano lessons in Croydon today, Let's make learning an enjoyable journey together!
