Welcome to
Hello, my name is Rhiain Awel and I offer professional harp lessons to students of all ages and abilities using online services like Zoom, Facetime or Skype. My lessons are always conducted in a professional manner and we will always learn at a pace that works for you. I like to make sure our learning experience together is an enjoyable one.
I am a professional harp teacher who is primarily based in Worthing but I have recently started to offer online lessons to all students no matter where you are in the world. Being able to offer online lessons has been a great way to connect with and help musicians from all over the world, not just in my own area. Thanks to the power of technology all you would need to get started is a device with a camera on it and an active internet connection, it's really never been simpler.
In my experience online lessons are a great way to learn an instrument and I have found that I am able to offer as high quality lessons as I would be even if we were doing face to face lessons, so please rest assured it's almost like were in the same room anyway, only you never have to leave the comfort of your own home. I think being in a comfortable and relaxed environment while your learning is a crucial part of retaining the most information and making the most progress.

I am a Welsh harpist and pianist who has recently moved to Croydon and I enjoy teaching both harp and piano children and adult pupils. I first studied harp, piano, and musicianship at the William Mathias Music Centre in Caernarfon with Elinor Bennett, Iwan Llywelyn Jones and Sioned Webb.
Born in Mynytho at the heart of the Llŷn Peninsula, I have enjoyed many successes in Welsh Eisteddfodau and festivals including first prize in harp competitions at the National Eisteddfod and the National Cerdd Dant Festival. I am lucky to have had a variety of unique experiences, including performing Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro and Paul Patterson’s Spiders Web at the Dora Stoutzker Concert Hall, being invited to perform with Catrin Finch at the World Harp Congress in Hong Kong, accompanying choirs on piano and playing keyboard in pit bands.
As well as teaching and performing as a soloist, I also enjoy creating music with others and am one-half of harp duo Dwyres alongside my sister. Dwyres are proud to have been a part of Osian Ellis’ 90th birthday celebration concert at Pontio Bangor alongside Bryn Terfel and Hannah Stone which was broadcast on Radio Cymru.
I have been giving private harp, theory, aural and piano lessons for the past ten years, taking nearly all my students through the ABRSM syllabus. From January 2018 I spent two years working and teaching at The Purcell School for Young Musicians. I firmly believe that communication with the parents of my younger students regarding the progress of their children is essential, and ensure that I provide regular feedback on their progress.
During my time at the Purcell School I taught theory and aural one to one on a weekly basis, giving students an extra boost before their ABRSM exams. I prepared many sixth form students for their grade five theory ensuring that they gained this crucial qualification before entering conservatoire.
As part of my continued professional training, I have undertaken a number of activities to enhance my teaching skills. I undertook various PGCE modules at Bangor University and have also participated in workshops and seminars at events such as the Music and Dance Expo, all of which have helped me hone my skills as a teacher and ensure my knowledge of effective teaching practices and exam boards is up to date.
Here is some information to help you get prepared to take your online harp lessons.
Speed Test, is a very useful tool as having a stable internet connection is one of the most important parts to these lessons. Here you will be able to see what your speeds are and we will only need a speed of 3mbps to have a stable enough connection for the lessons.
As well as a stable internet connection you will need to have access to some kind of electronic device that has a camera on it. This could be things like a laptop, tablet or a smartphone. Many things have cameras on them nowadays so once we have access to one of these you are ready to go.
Once you have a device ready to go, there are many services we can use to connect for the actual lessons. The most common and reliable service tends to be Zoom. If this doesn't work things like Skype or Facetime for Apple device users are also an option.
I take great pride in offering professional and high quality online harp lessons. I am very passionate about what I do and together we can get you to become the harpist you've always wanted to be right from the comfort of your own home.
[email protected]Lessons are £18.50 for half an hours or £37 for an hours tuition.
Lessons are provided online using services such as Zoom, Facetime or Skype. There are others we can try but these tend to work fine for the majority of people.
I teach students of all ages 6+.
No you can attend lessons as and when you like. I would recommend one hour a week for the most consistent progress.
I ask for 24 hours notice if a students is not able to make the lesson that week or the lesson is to be paid for.
