Exams have been scheduled at the worst time possible… (All Teachers)
Hi All,
A bit of advice is what I’m really after here…
I’ve just found out that my students exams have been scheduled for the 23rd July, unfortunately this is the day I fly back from holiday so it means that they won’t have had a lesson for at least 2 weeks before their exam, and now I’m getting a bit stressed out!
What would you do in this scenario? I can either schedule as many in as possible in the days before I leave, or something I don’t want to really do is have a ‘touch in’ day on the week of the exam, especially as I’m on holiday and I will have a 5 hour time difference!
The exam board will not change the day and suggested “that they practice more” while I am away. I did request the 9th July which was the weekend before I leave, I know it wasn’t guaranteed but it’s just sods law that the exam is on the day I fly home (it couldn’t have been the start of my holiday!) Arghhhhhhh

What resources can you provide to help guide practice while you’re away? I’m currently making audio files of the technical exercises for my Rock School kids, I’m telling my ABRSM candidates about the Aural Trainer app, and slowly making crappy MIDI files in sibelius so at least they have something to sing along to as the practice. If their technique is at the appropriate standard for the exam, maybe some good resources to help them practice is almost as good as extra sessions with you.

I would just say it’s bad timing!!!!
Personally I can see positive and negative points about exam entries. As a teacher, my mentality is that if a student does not know 80% of their scales/ arpeggios and 2 of their 3 pieces by the time I enter them then they are not ready. I currently have a student which has been pushed by his parents to take the exam now. But what they didn’t tell me was the week before the exam he is away on a trip. If I had known about that I would have suggested leaving the exam until Autumn!However, sometimes there will be always be situations beyond our control! I know I will have prepared this student as best I can so I know I cannot do anymore
