Any tips for finding potential students? (All Teachers)
Posted by Tom Young on June 24, 2024 at 10:47 amHi all,
I’m currently attempting to set myself up as a full time guitar tutor. At the moment I’m only able to do lessons part time on account of the low uptake (most likely due in part to covid19).
If you could share any advice on good methods/ areas to locate students I would be very grateful.
I am local to the Leicestershire area I have around 1 year of teaching experience as a freelancer.
Thanks,
Tom

Word of mouth is really the best It takes time.Do not expect an influx all at once.Be able to tailor your cost to those who want to train but are not financially able to pay a silly amount. It pays off.Let your students do the talking.Hope this helps. Best Hopes for you.Keep calm and carry on. xx

Totally agree. Word of mouth is incredibly powerful.
I am also based in the Leicestershire area so am happy to meet up for SD.
When I was able to travel and see students 1-2-1 I would make sure my journey meant minimal travelling. For example, during a Wednesday evening I made sure all my students were in Oadby.
Now that 80% of my lessons are virtual, I have changed how I teach a lot so flexibility is also important!

Hi Tom
Try approaching schools. I’m from Derby and there is a company I’m with called Derbyshire Music Hub who help with all this stuff. So it’s not just like a randomer approaching a school. You could see if there are any similar companies within the local council or something that do that sort of thing. Hope that helps 🙂

2/3 of my studio comes from Thumbtack.
I am exploring other options now though because I have had two students downgrade their service (I offer my lessons in tiers!) and one give notice to discontinue, and it’s been a few days since I have received a Thumbtack lead!

Hi Tom,
I agree with some of the other comments about the importance of word of mouth. I find it helpful to incentivise the students who I feel are most invested in my teaching by offering them free lessons if they recommend a friend who has a minimum of 2 lessons with me.
Hope that helps!
Best

Hi Guy! I give an Amazon gift card for referrals. It works well during tax season here in the US anyway. 😉
