What I Offer

My ukulele lessons are personalised to help you grow as a musician and make the most of your musical talents. You’ll learn everything from basic melodies to more complex tunes. The aim is to not only teach you how to play but to help you truly understand and appreciate the music.

Learning Beyond the Ukulele

While ukulele is my primary focus, I recognise that many students have interests in other instruments such as guitar or drums. As part of a network of knowledgeable tutors, I can connect you with more teachers who offer lessons for an alternative instrument, should you wish to expand your musical repertoire.

Learn All Genres

As a dedicated ukulele teacher, I believe the beauty of music lies in its incredible diversity. The ukulele is a versatile instrument that can adapt to many genres, adding its unique charm to each style. With my ukulele lessons, beginners and experienced players alike have the chance to journey through various musical genres, enriching their playing experience.

Pop and Rock

If you're a fan of catchy tunes and energetic beats, you’ll love our pop and rock sessions. The ukulele adds a fresh twist to classic hits and modern favourites. As your teacher, I’ll guide you through strumming patterns and melody lines, helping you recreate the essence of popular songs.

Blues and Jazz

For those who enjoy the soulful depth of blues or the sophisticated rhythms of jazz, the ukulele offers the perfect canvas to explore these complex genres. Our ukulele lessons will cover essential techniques like fingerpicking and chord progressions, drawing parallels to guitar lessons so you can seamlessly integrate your skills in other areas

Folk and Country

The ukulele’s roots are steeped in folk traditions, making it perfect for those interested in traditional and country tunes. In my lessons, you’ll delve into the nuances of storytelling through music, guided by tuition that focuses on the rich melodies and harmonies inherent in these genres.

Classical and World Music

Expanding beyond the conventional, you can engage with classical pieces and explore world music through our sessions. Whether you're joining as a beginner or looking to diversify your musical repertoire, my ukulele lessons cater to all interests. Together in every lesson, we’ll learn and grow as musicians, delving into each genre with enthusiasm and a shared love for the ukulele.

The Difference Between Ukulele, Guitar & Bass Guitar

When I first started giving ukulele lessons here in Southampton, I noticed how distinct the ukulele is from its bigger siblings, the guitar and bass guitar. For one, the ukulele usually has four nylon strings, which give it that cheerful, bright sound we all know and love. It's perfect for beginners and children because its size is manageable and the chord shapes are relatively simple. Here, our ukulele teachers, who are all professional musicians, take pride in offering lessons that cater to both beginners and more advanced players, ensuring progress each week.

Guitar Wonders

On the other hand, the guitar, which many of my students start learning music with, typically has six strings. These can be steel or nylon, depending on the type, and offer a wider range of melodies and dynamic possibilities. With more strings, guitars allow for a more complex pattern of chords and are frequently played across a variety of music styles. In our guitar lessons, teachers focus on age-appropriate methods to build students' skills, no matter their playing abilities, guiding them with enthusiasm and patience.

The Bass Guitar

Then there's the bass guitar, which some of my students transition to as they advance. Despite having only four strings like the ukulele, they are thicker and play lower notes, providing the essential backbone of any band with its deep, resonant tones. Our tutors, who are also accomplished bass players, emphasise rhythm and timing, crucial skills needed to master this powerful instrument.

Whether you choose ukulele, guitar, or bass guitar, all our teachers in Southampton are dedicated to making the experience enriching and fun. We hope you'll join us in this musical journey and discover the joy of playing.
