The Difference Between Ukulele, Guitar & Bass Guitar
When I first started giving ukulele lessons here in Southampton, I noticed how distinct the ukulele is from its bigger siblings, the guitar and bass guitar. For one, the ukulele usually has four nylon strings, which give it that cheerful, bright sound we all know and love. It's perfect for beginners and children because its size is manageable and the chord shapes are relatively simple. Here, our ukulele teachers, who are all professional musicians, take pride in offering lessons that cater to both beginners and more advanced players, ensuring progress each week.
Guitar Wonders
On the other hand, the guitar, which many of my students start learning music with, typically has six strings. These can be steel or nylon, depending on the type, and offer a wider range of melodies and dynamic possibilities. With more strings, guitars allow for a more complex pattern of chords and are frequently played across a variety of music styles. In our guitar lessons, teachers focus on age-appropriate methods to build students' skills, no matter their playing abilities, guiding them with enthusiasm and patience.
The Bass Guitar
Then there's the bass guitar, which some of my students transition to as they advance. Despite having only four strings like the ukulele, they are thicker and play lower notes, providing the essential backbone of any band with its deep, resonant tones. Our tutors, who are also accomplished bass players, emphasise rhythm and timing, crucial skills needed to master this powerful instrument.
Whether you choose ukulele, guitar, or bass guitar, all our teachers in Southampton are dedicated to making the experience enriching and fun. We hope you'll join us in this musical journey and discover the joy of playing.

Consistency and practice are key, and I’ll support you every step of the way. From helping you master strumming patterns to tackling tricky chord transitions, I’m here to guide you on your ukulele journey. By the end of our sessions, you’ll have the skills and confidence to explore your musical creativity independently. With personalised attention and a passion for teaching, I’m committed to offering proper ukulele tuition that fits you perfectly.
