I normally don’t 🙂 It’s because I play either jazz gigs that are very late or being a side musician, or private events. Some of my more advanced students live in USA though. So I can’t invite them. I do have one older British student who said he is very interested in attending one of the gigs, so may invite him if i have something public that isn’t super late hours. But i wouldn’t invite someone who is clearly into rock or pop to a jazz gig. 🙂 My teaching “persona” seem to be sort a different one than a gigging musician persona ( even my name) 🙂 I more often than not teach different type of music to my students than the sort I would listen to. As I adapt to students taste.

Minimum per hour according to MU is £38.5, for tax year 22-23. I personally charge 45£, and 35£ per 30min. I know it’s a higher rate than average but i have experience in a world class teaching institution so I believe I am worth this pricing. I don’t think people should go below 38.5£ though. The Musician Union minimum increasing for 2023-2024 year to 40.5 per hour. For example, American advanced students of mine on zoom actually pays way more than 45, it’s usually way more advanced jazz stuff though and those students are a little harder to acquire. That said, I sometimes negotiate lower prices with parents in London if it’s 2 siblings or if they pay in advance etc.
