About

About

I am a Cheltenham-based guitar teacher and I’m now teaching  face to face and over zoom from my home. I’m registered as a Rockschool guitar tutor and have studied several of their grades independently. I also teach in several schools and play in a band.

I can support you through your guitar journey and if it’s of interest through electric guitar grades. I teach a variety of styles from classic rock, hard rock, heavy metal, blues rock, funk rock, blues, pop-punk, acoustic, music theory and how to apply it. I can also help with reading music notation, improvising, ear training, improving rhythmically, and advanced electric guitar techniques.

I have been in bands and also been in an acoustic duo and played in many bars and pubs.  In my lessons you will get a pdf with tablature that covers everything we did in the lesson and what to practice to help you develop your guitar skills more quickly.

I really love Teaching Guitar and I have found it very challenging over the years but with passion, structure, and goals I have managed to get to where I want to l be and so can you!

My son 6 has been having lessons with James for about 3 months and enjoys each session they have. Currently taking place over Skype it is convenient and easy and James is always on time, professional, encouraging and teaches to my sons ability. We are thoroughly happy with how the sessions work and their cost and highly recommend James as a guitar teacher.

James has been teaching my 11 year old son for 6 months now and I am truly astounded how well he is doing. James took the time to cover the basics and give my son the proper grounding and now he is playing tunes and reading music so well! James communicates brilliantly and is patient and kind. He takes time out to think of songs my son would like and send us pieces of music for him to practice. My son loves his lessons and I am so glad James is his teacher.

After 2-3 yrs self/internet taught I was nervous about having one to one lesson. So happy I took the plunge! James made me feel immediately at ease & assessed my level, which I had no idea of. Just had my second lesson & we’re covering moveable chords including barre chords, scales (which I was lacking), moveable dominant 7ths & strumming..(which I’m also lacking skills in). James is very good at teaching in an understandable way & happily answers all my questions I come up with. He sends the tabs & notes via email after each lesson & keeps in touch via messenger between lessons to check everything’s going ok. He’s also encouraged me to go for the Rockschool grading, which two weeks ago I never dreamt I’d be doing, esp starting at gde 4. Highly recommend James & his teaching methods. I’m loving my lessons & learning the theory behind what I’m playing. Pricing is also very good! Thank you! 🙂

James has helped me for months now in some very important areas that I’ve struggled with on guitar, for ages. Now, having had his help I can play faster, I have better tone, I’m more accurate, understand the modes, and know loads of new chord types and how to use them and improvise over them. James has been a great guide in overcoming the simple things I had wrong, correcting bad habits, and also covering some really advanced material too. I’m a better, more confident player and I enjoy playing more than I ever had as a result!

James is a great guitar teacher with tremendous knowledge of music theory. He knows exactly how to explain things in an easy to understand way and our hour long lessons go by so quickly each week with so much productive conversation. I wasn’t sure how a Skype video lesson with someone in another country would work but it has proven to work great. I have learned so much in the few months with James and believe I have become a much better guitarist as a result. With so much free online lessons there is definitely a lot of good supplemental information on the internet for the modern day guitarist to learn from. However nothing can substitute the human interaction with a teacher who can critique you and fill in the gaps of knowledge you otherwise have to figure out yourself. For that James can teach any student the solid foundation they require to go from good to great as a guitarist.
