About

About

Hi! So glad you are checking me out. I am a full-time pianist and professional music teacher/music/composer with over 35 yrs of experience and I love what I do. I teach all levels including adult students which I find great pleasure in.

I am very professional and flexible in my musical abilities and tastes. While my main training (two degrees) is in classical piano I very much also enjoy playing some pop, standards, and light jazz and can play by ear as well as by sight. As a teacher, I believe in providing as broad a foundation as possible while being very flexible and understanding of each student’s needs.

We are all similar and yet so different at the same time. I am a very patient teacher and believe my biggest job (and honor) is to make the experience enjoyable because when we enjoy something we tend to succeed.

I enjoy working making people happy through music whether it be through a performance that brings some joy and peace or through helping someone fulfil their dream to make music as well.

Music Qualifications & Achievements:

  • I have been a full-time pianist and professional teacher my entire career which now spans some 35 yrs
  • I earned Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Tyndale College, Toronto, and the A.R.C.T. in piano performance (highest level) from the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto
  • I have also won several awards for music composition and recordings including two different album of the year awards for Best Piano with Instruments

My first lesson was really helpful and I’m looking forward to the nest one – Gary is a great teacher.

He is very knowlegeable, takes time prior to lesson to get to know you so he can personalize your lessons. He is a very good teacher.

It is an honor to be a student of Windham Hill recording artist, Gary Schmidt. His artistry and original compositions on his latest recording release, Landscapes of the Heart, truly touch the heart. His calm patience and love of music as my teacher provide me with clarity, direction and confidence as I develop the skills and techniques needed to play music from my heart.

Gary is a fantastic teacher. He is very patient, kind, and let’s the student dictate the rate of progression. His knowledge of musical theory and way of explaining it helped me understand the lessons better at a foundational level. He is also a pleasure to work with if a lesson needs to be rescheduled for any reason. He is laid back, very talented, and his passion for teaching others is evident every time I come in for a lesson. I would highly recommend him to both young and older adults.

We started my granddaughter with Gary in December. We couldn’t be happier with Savannah’s progress and growing love of music. Gary inspires her, challenges her and, unlike me at that age, she never complains about practicing. We look forward to seeing Savannah soar with Gary’s help and instruction. We know we made a great choice in piano teachers.
