Can I learn to play the Oboe?
Learning the Oboe, as with any other instrument as you can imagine, isn’t easy. It takes a lot of time and dedication to learn an instrument like this. It helps to have a clear playing goal in mind when you first start to learn. From there, your teacher can help you find new aspects of your playing to improve. The most effective way of learning is by far a combination of weekly lessons and home practice and this really is something that anyone can do and anyone can achieve. For sure, everyone learns at different paces and this is something that all teachers recognise. Sometimes you have to start with the more boring side of learning to progress but this is something that everyone had to do at one point, your teacher included.
As a teacher we have many people asking us what it takes to learn to play an instrument and the answer is simple. Time and practice. Having a teacher you enjoy learning with is half the battle but you also have to enjoy learning to play yourself and want to do it. It’s very hard to learn anything if you find yourself forcing practice or not enjoying lessons. In this situation any teacher would always suggest that the instrument is not for you.
In some situations if you already have musical experience, it can be really easy to pick up a second instrument, for example, those who have played piano sometimes find a lot of links between piano and guitar, or those who have played violin may find it easier to learn double bass. Whatever your background though, with the right level of dedication you can achieve anything in our opinion.
Learning online and from youtube can be an okay way to learn the basics but generally I would say these are tools that are far better used once you have an understanding of an instrument. It’s very easy to pick up bad habits when learning alone and I would generally push students away from this method of learning. With the guidance of a teacher you can really pick up the correct technique and skills to make learning both enjoyable and easier for the foreseeable future.
If you don’t have a musical background it’s also completely fine to learn an instrument like the Oboe. Your teacher will take you through the very basics and you’ll always learn at a speed that you can feel comfortable with.
Our teachers will always be there to help you on your journey, anyone can learn and our teachers are always willing to teach. If you’re a beginner or an advanced player please get in touch. Our teachers will always make sure you learn the styles that you enjoy and will make sure you learn in a direction you feel comfortable with in the long run.
If you are a young learner or a more advanced player then also please get in touch. All lessons are built around the students’ needs. If you are a parent looking for a teacher then please check each teacher’s profile to see their experience and whether they offer lessons for children and in most cases they probably will and will make a course that suits a young learner. You’ll always learn at a level or pace that suits your playing ability level. Learning isn’t easy but with the right guidance anything is possible.
