Welcome to
Hello! My name is Sam Evans I'm a professional guitar/music tutor based in Headingley, Leeds. I work alongside a network of other professional tutors across Leeds to find the most suitable to your needs in a location that suits you.
I specialise in composition on the guitar, using unconventional techniques to create a unique and modern/electronic sounding music. Palm muting, poly-rhythms, parallel harmony, tremolo picking and particular effects are just some of the techniques I use to achieve this sound. Education and qualifications aside, I have a real passion for music and the ability to communicate what I have learned to my students.
Every student will be unique and I have the experience and understanding to adapt and tailor the lessons to the student's needs. Alongside keeping the material challenging and engaging, it's important to remind ourselves that learning/playing music is one of the most enjoyable activities one can do. This is always considered when I plan my lessons.

Beginners or experienced students welcome and everyone is different. Initially it's Important to identify where the student is currently at in the context of ability and establish a plan from there. A young inexperienced player could expect some very basic fundamentals ranging from how to hold the guitar correctly.
Identifying key components on the guitar. How to tune the guitar. Then progressing on to playing open triads, particularly I IV V Vi- first in keys accessible with open voiced chords. Then progressing on to barre chords and more complex harmony. Most importantly, regardless of ability, each student will be met with a pleasant, understanding and friendly disposition whilst undertaking lessons with me.
Lessons are pay-as-you-go, weekly, fortnightly or as suits you.
I welcome both beginners and advanced learners in a wide range of genres and styles. I will always make a lesson plan that suits your playing style and learning level.
I can offer a unique and unconventional style and sound to composition that I have achieved through the varied stylistic background of my experience. I can also offer an understanding and relatable approach to learning as someone who has struggled through the process with very little formal education prior to university. I understand better than most what mistakes to avoid early on and how to go about overcoming them.
Alongside my qualifications and education the most important skills I have to offer are those I've acquired from hours of hard work and dedication to understanding my instrument.
A deep understanding is important so I can properly articulate the material. Having the pleasure of being taught by some incredible tutors at Leeds Conservatoire such as; Jamie Taylor, Jamil Sheriff and Dave Walsh, I thankfully have 3 years of first hand experience to draw on when it comes to excellent tuition.
Experienced students for example may want to explore more complex harmony, starting with 7th chords and progressing to extended chords and how and why those extensions are used. Exploring improvisation and opening up the complex world of the guitar fretboard. Re-harmonising common progressions and understanding which chords are related, why and how that can be used to your advantage as a musician/composer.
Chromaticism and enclosures, Be-Bop language and good time-feel (achieved through thorough metronome practice). Odd meters and poly-rhythms are useful for creating rhythmic tension. Internalising these through exercises and practice can allow them to organically come out in your improvisations/compositions.
A deeper look into some techniques I use in my own compositions. Moving away from basic diatonic harmony introducing borrowed chords from parallel scales. Odd groupings can create a sense of rhythmic tension even if the piece is in 4/4 for example. How to employ these techniques in a musical and tasteful manner.
I'm an experienced guitar player, performer and teacher who can really help you learn more and reach your potential via personalised lessons that you can really enjoy. I really feel that learning to play the guitar is something that should be enjoyable and I like to keep my lessons as enjoyable as possible.
