I am the parent of a fifth grader. There are 4 fifth grade classrooms. One was chosen to get all of the speaking roles. Kids in the other three classrooms were ineligible for a speaking role. We are not just talking about 1-2 lines; some kids get to be main characters, while other kids are shut out of being main characters because their class was assigned to do props or something. I reached out to the music teacher, who explained that because the classrooms have music at different times, and they are using that time to rehearse, she had to do the casting that way. The school will not explain why that classroom was chosen. I have talked to many parents who feel that this is unfair. I am interested in the perspective of music teachers. Is this an acceptable way to cast a show? Can you really give one classroom all speaking roles include main characters, one classroom responsibility for props, one classroom responsibility for costumes, and say that everyone received equal roles? I agree that every role, on stage or off it, minor or major, makes a valuable contribution. I also think that there should have been a process for casting the major roles. Would doing something else for the spring show, like having each room do a skit, have been a better choice?
