All Styles Taught

We have a wide range of teachers in our community who offer exciting lessons for learners of all abilities. We offer a wide range of styles from the more popular to the more obscure. Simply check out a teacher’s profile to see what genres and styles that they offer to learners of your chosen instrument.

Our teachers have a wide range of teaching styles as well. Some can take you through graded exams while others can take you down a less traditional route, for example, learning the songs that you enjoy. Ultimately, the choice is yours, one thing all teachers can agree on is that lessons need to be built around the students’ needs and if the student is happy then so is the teacher. Both adults and young learners are more than welcome to take lessons and if you want to know what ages a teacher can teach, please check out their profile.

Take your Daf playing to the next level!

Every Daf lesson is built around the student and their needs as a learner. This then means that no two lessons are ever the same. For example a beginner and an advanced player won’t be learning the same material. For this reason, our teachers will use their experience to build a lesson plan which is moulded to your level of playing which means you can truly learn in a direction that you want to and that you feel comfortable with as a learner.

Learners from all playing backgrounds and playing levels are welcome. Beginners are more than welcome to take lessons as well as more advanced daf players. If you are learning difficult pieces or just learning the basics, all of our teachers will welcome you. For more information about what levels are offered from a certain teacher, Just check out their profile.

If you have never tried the setar before you’re still welcome. If you have something specific you want to work on then please let our teachers know. If you want to learn Daf to accompany another instrument like sitar for example, please let your teacher know and they will help you work on this.

We also have several teachers who have experience in both composing music and performing live so If you want to work on building confidence, writing your own music or performing in future our teachers will be more than happy to help you work towards any goals that you might have, whether they are long term of short term it will definitely be possible.

Learning the Daf is definitely not easy, and all of our teachers understand this as we were all there once as well at some point. Our teachers will approach your goals with a clear patient plan. But, always remember that learning an instrument like the daf can be done by anyone but it will take a lot of practice and dedication. This means practising outside of lesson hours as well.

Are you a Daf teacher?

Daf teachers in the community teach in a wide variety of ways including face to face, online or both. This is totally down to the teacher’s preference. In terms of location some teachers rent a teaching studio, some teach from home and others visit their students’ homes. Regardless of how you teach your students we would love to work with you so please do get in touch for more information about teaching Daf to our community of students.

What is Daf?

Persian Daf is a frame drum found in many cultures and countries such as Kurdistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Iran, Turkey, Greece etc. With the most common being the persian variety. It has a clangorous as well as cheerful sound. It has different sizes and it appears with or without metallic rings. Being in these various forms, daf can be used in varied social situations, from performances of Persian classical music or Sufî rituals to performances of street entertainers.

It takes a lot of time and dedication to learn an instrument like this. It helps to have a clear playing goal in mind when you first start to learn. From there, your teacher can help you find new aspects of your playing to improve. The most effective way of learning is by far a combination of weekly lessons and home practice and this really is something that anyone can do and anyone can achieve. For sure, everyone learns at different paces and this is something that all teachers recognise. Sometimes you have to start with the more boring side of learning to progress but this is something that everyone had to do at one point, your teacher included.

Daf is an interesting instrument which has been constructed in a certain way to get the required sound. The jingles which are thin metal plates or rings, are attached to hooks in three or four rectangular holes in the circular wooden frame. The drumhead is made of fish or goat skin. The width of the frame is 45–50 cm (18–20 in.) and the depth, 5–7 cm (2–3 in.). In order to bend the frame, the wood may be softened in water before being bent around a hot metal cylinder. The frame is closed by glueing the ends together. Finally, the skin is attached to the frame by fixing it with another wooden frame or by using nails. Another variation is to have the ring-style jingles arranged around the edge of the inside of the drum the whole way around or to have several tiers half way around the inside edge.

Due to history this instrument can also be found in Spain quite often because the Arabs introduced the daf and other Middle Eastern musical instruments to Spain, and the Spanish adapted and promoted the daf and other musical instruments (such as the guitar) in medieval Europe and has since become a very popular and common instrument in europe as well as the middle east.

It’s a very interesting instrument that can be incredibly enjoyable to learn for all.
