About Me

Hi! I have been teaching violin for several years both privately and through Muswell Young Musicians in London and I teach beginner and intermediate violin, up to Grade 5. I have experience with students of all ages and abilities, and particularly enjoy working with beginner students, no matter their age. My youngest pupil was 4 years old. I also have experience with students who need extra support in learning, particularly students with Autism.

I aim to provide lessons that are fun – I want you to love the violin! The more you love to play, the easier it is to remember to practice at home. We will be learning music theory as we go, so you can better understand what you’re playing. I also combine learning violin with lots of singing in the lessons to help with ear training and general musicanship, drawing on Kodaly Method. We will focus on listening skills, reading music, improvising, as well as technical and musicianship skills required to play the violin.

I trained in Violin (Grade 8 RCME) and music theory (Grade 2 RCME), as well as theatre performance, in Canada. I am a friendly and encouraging teacher. I have a BA in theatre, and I love to explore storytelling and emotional expression through music. I am a classical violinist, but will be excited to explore different styles with you, from trad. music to pop covers, whatever makes you excited to play music!

I have taken several students through their ABRSM exams, and am confident to help you through that, up to Grade 5. I also think there is value in playing without being graded, so please let me know what your goals are when we start so I can help guide you. I check in often about your goals and how you are finding playing so that lessons are tailored to your experience. Practicing performing is very important as well, and I make sure that we have several informal concert opportunities through the year, whether that is performing for other students, or for your family, or some friends. Lessons can be 30, 45, or 60 mins. You will need your own instrument. I can help with sizing and recommendations if you have any questions! If you have begun playing already, please bring any music with you so I can see where you are up to. If you and a friend, or two siblings would like to start with group lessons, please do speak to me.

The pricing and timing will be slightly adjusted, and I will want to make sure that the participants are well matched, but I am happy to explore the idea with you, even if just to start with! If you have any questions, please do get in touch. I hope to hear from you! Eleanor.
