About Me

About

I have been playing the guitar for over 16 years, starting when I got my first guitar for my 15th birthday. I was driven by a love of Metallica and Iron Maiden and would spend hours each day learning all their riffs and solos, and after a couple of years teaching myself, I formed my first band.

When I came to the end of school, I felt I needed some formal music tuition, so I attended college in Stratford before moving to university in Kilburn. All the while I was developing my skills as an instrumentalist, learning to play in different styles, genres, improving my technique and understanding of theory, as well as learning how to write my own music.

For over two years, I have been providing one-to-one tuition to guitar students, ranging from 5-year-old students to retired adults. During the lockdown, I began teaching students online via Skype, which enabled me to share digital files with my students, as well as teaching students who aren’t in my local area. With lockdown having eased, I have since returned to teaching in person for students who are nearby but retaining online lessons for students further afield.

Music Qualifications & Achievements:

I have received a BMus with First Class Honours in Popular Music Performance from The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, located in Kilburn. I also have achieved Grade 8 Rockschool in guitar.

I have performed with several bands, working both as a session musician for a singer-songwriter and as a contributor to the material. in 2017 I formed my own project, a hardcore band named Chaos Reigns, for which I write all the music and play the bass guitar. We have played across the country and released two EPs, both of which I am incredibly proud of. Being able to play your own music on stage and receive any sort of response is an incredible feeling and one I hope my students will one day be able to achieve!

I decided to start teaching on the recommendation of one of my band members. Seeing as I love playing the guitar, I thought it would be a great opportunity to share my passion with aspiring guitarists and help them on their journey. Not only do I get to help people achieve their goals and develop their skills on the instrument, but it also keeps me on my toes with having to revise different techniques and styles! It really is so rewarding seeing the progress students make, with many starting lessons with no prior experience and being able to play some of their favourite songs in no time.

“Billy is fantastic. He is currently teaching my 6 year old, who absolutely enjoys the lessons. Billy is very patient and I am really happy with how the sessions are progressing.”

“Billy is a great tutor who’s very student focussed. He’s quick to pick up on when I don’t understand something and also quick to pick up on if I’m finding something too basic. I’ve learned more about theory and transferring it to guitar in 2 sessions than I have in 2 months of trawling through YouTube videos and other resources. Very versatile tutor who I look forward to integrating into my long term guitar plans! I’ve been through a couple of tutors previously and Billy has been by far the best.”

“Billy is super informative and helpful every step of the way. He’s beyond patient and makes an effort to base lessons on whatever you actually want to learn, best tutor for guitar available!”

“We had two classes for now and it’s going well so far. Billy has a balanced approach to theory and practice. He also cares about the habits I’m forming and tries hard to push me to a correct form in finger positioning etc. I find his nudges helpful as I feel that kind of things will be harder for me to fix in the future.”

“Been having lessons with Billy for about 8 weeks now, really enjoying them! His style of teaching is very relaxed, fun and friendly but also challenging. He answers any questions I have both during lessons and in between, and is often asking if there’s anything I’d like to be focusing more on, which offers a great balance. Highly recommend!”

“Billy is such a good teacher! I’ve picked up the guitar on and off over the years, but I’ve never stuck it out. Now, it’s been almost a year of classes with Billy and I’m still at it!

Billy has a very relaxed and flexible approach to his teaching style and he’s happy to adjust our classes to suit my specific needs, interests and guitar goals. His tips and tricks have helped me so much, and he has a very comprehensive understanding of music theory which he shares in manageable doses.

Billy also puts in the time to prepare for our classes and creates material that’s unique for me, which I really appreciate. He’s also very attentive to detail and sometimes I can’t believe how he can hear or see little issues I have on the guitar over Skype!

I plan on continuing lessons with Billy and I highly recommend him as a guitar teacher.”
