Bassoon & Music Theory Teacher in Cardiff

Teacher Info

I am a professional freelance musician with many years of teaching experience, offering bassoon lessons and music theory tuition. I have taught both privately and through Music Services for seven years. I have experience with entering pupils for ABRSM grades as well as lessons for fun and professional development teaching.

I started playing instruments when I was 4. My very first instrument was the recorder and then I started learning the clarinet and trumpet a few years later. I then started playing the bassoon as a teenager and my musical career took off. During my later years of school, I was lucky enough to play in youth orchestras and I absolutely fell in love with it and I feel so privileged to be making in to my career.

I have a pupil-centred approach to teaching, encouraging exploration of what a pupil connects with and is enthused by musically. I aim to give a wide overview of music in my teaching by developing a natural link with music theory as the pupil learns the notes, instrumental techniques and skills. I encourage playing with others in ensembles where possible and I aim to play a duet most lessons to work on both aural and sight-reading skills. My love of teaching comes from my passion for expression through music and encouraging my pupils to explore and progress.

Alanna has been fantastic teaching my kids over many years. She is punctual and reliable and knows her stuff. She knows what’s required in the exams. She is also great online and has overcome all the challenges of online learning.

Having always wanted to learn a musical instrument, lockdown was the perfect chance to finally embrace the challenge. As a mature beginner, with a chronic physical disability, I was hesitant and a little worried about making a fool of myself but Alanna put me perfectly at ease and is an inspiring, lively teacher. Her obvious love of music and teaching shine through and I look forward to my lessons, which are tailored around my other commitments.

Alanna was my daughter’s first trumpet teacher. With her guidance, my daughter made a great start as Alanna always pitched the learning just right for my child’s age and ability. She was warm and friendly yet professional and my child always looked forward to her lessons. They were flexible yet always prepared and well structured, and I would not hesitate to recommend Alanna as an educator.
