Teacher Info

Violinist and teacher Julia Castellanos operates a teaching studio out of her home in Cowley, Oxford.

She first began teaching professionally in 2009, and soon discovered that it was a joy to share the knowledge she acquired through her own practice and education with her students. She teaches in both the traditional method and the Suzuki Method, in which she was recently certified through the British Suzuki Music Association in Birmingham. She has taught violin in a wide range of settings, including private lessons, group classes, orchestral sectionals, and chamber music coaching. It has been inspiring for her to watch students improve at the violin and become curious about the process of practicing, learning, and becoming independent musicians. One of the things she enjoys most about teaching is getting to know an individual’s learning style, and tailoring her lessons to fit the needs and goals of the student. She teaches students of all ages and abilities, from 3 year old beginners, to advanced teenagers, to adults who are looking to dust off their musical abilities.

As a musician, one of her personal goals since graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 2009 has been to prepare for professional orchestra auditions. She has played in orchestras throughout the United States and Europe, including the National Repertory Orchestra (USA), the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, the Refugee Orchestra Project of NYC, the Hudson Valley Philharmonic (USA), and, most recently, the Symphonic Orchestra of Bilbao in northern Spain. This type of preparation is deeply analytical, leading to a rich understanding of the challenges and technicalities of the violin and music in general.

This, in combination with her pedagogical training and certification in the Suzuki Method make her highly qualified to teach violinists of all ages, especially total beginners who want to achieve a solid technical foundation from day one. She believed that once students have a solid technical foundation, they have the freedom to play any type of music they want, whether it’s a favorite pop song on the radio, an unaccompanied Bach sonata, or a classic fiddle tune. Students who decide to take lessons with Julia can expect to learn music through student-centered lessons in a welcoming, encouraging, and nonjudgemental environment. Through dedicated, efficient, and focused practicing, students can expect to reach an independent level of playing and a fulfilling learning experience.
